Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip
Rob Williams • Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #431
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!
A bonus treat this Friday as Pip is joined by writer of Channel 4’s new prison drama ‘Screw’, ROB WILLIAMS!
Rob of course has worked on a great amount of productions and works, but the focus this episode is the series Screw, and how it all formulated including the development and so on. The synopsis for Screw reads: “This is prison as never seen before – the uncensored, shocking and often darkly funny reality of life as a prison officer in an all-male prison in 21st century Britain” - and if that triggers your interests then this will be a perfect episode as Pip and writer Rob get deep into the mechanics and background of it all. A wide ranging chat which covers dystopian overload, teaching in prison, the lack of prison officer based shows, representation, being defined by the worst moment of your life, long running shows and the UK television framework, writing as part of a well oiled machine, writing to hooks and holding attention, Eastenders, Casualty, and loads more which will appeal to basically anyone with an interest in broadcast media. ENJOY!

680. ELIS JAMES • Thinking big, like Royal Albert Hall-big (Elis & John / Socially Distant Sports Club / standup) #680
01:23:17||Ep. 680Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by frankly long overdue comic and podcaster ELIS JAMES!Elis is something of a missing piece in the Distraction Pieces puzzle, one of those guests whose appearance was only a matter of time (a long time, sure, but inevitable). It's a pleasure to have him, and as you'd expect/demand, so much ground gets covered. Silence and not stressing it, a Humble Pie album of all things, podcasting with John Robins, the nuance of performance environments and the beauty of old venues, the weird and not awesome world of early morning comedy gigs, performing standup in Welsh, opportunity and being bold, the long and surprising road to the Albert Hall, football, technology adjusted ambition, the Cymru Connection (and the New York Times discovering it), and other favourite podcasts. Oh but so much besides. Lovely stuff, enjoy!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureONLINEMANY ELIS & JOHN LINKSEP 428 Elis & John podcastHUMBLE PIEELIS IN NEW YORK TIMESSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDB
GUZ KHAN (Bait / Man Like Mobeen / Walk Like A Panther) • Friday Rewind
01:06:02|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Guz Khan, originally episode 185 from 2018-01-24.Original writeup below:Mad entertaining from start to end, as Pip sits down with Guz for a truly matey chat but which brings out the best of both! They were first acquainted back around a year ago on set on the upcoming ‘Walk Like A Panther’, where they behaved like naughty schoolkids on set by all accounts, and this is a catchup / roundup / ahead look at what Guz is involved with - a huge amount it turns out, and a wide range of topics get handled, such as Guz being new to the whole celebrity life and how surreal it can be (down to the weirdness of having a team), the importance of vibes on set and getting on with the crew, how he was essentially raised by three strong women and how that shaped his personality and humour, the art of storytelling, outrage vs laughing it off, teaching and how moments of discussion and clarity are so important to catch and build on, getting the tone right in filming in his hometown and creating a friendly space to do so, and just a whole ton more… Oh, and his new show ‘Man Like Mobeen’ on BBC3! 679. TOMO CAMPBELL • Live @ Harry Styles' Meltdown (Southbank Centre, London) #679
01:08:06||Ep. 679Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined live on stage at the Harry Styles-curated Meltdown Festival by incredible artist TOMO CAMPBELL!To quote London's Cob Gallery, "[Tomo's] abstracted depictions of 'traditional' subjects such as hunting, parades and explorers are, as he puts it, 'never quite solid or whole', yet they exude an extraordinarily rich sense of vision". Now that's just so you know at least a little about Tomo if you're not familiar! After the chat with Pip live on stage you will likely be very inspired to pick up on where the chat leaves off and have a look at his work online (or in person if you're nearby). The conversation itself is fabulous, and features a huge amount to leave you well acquainted with Tomo, including art and class, education, inspiration, the slow creep from Houndslow to London, the choice between football and art, mood iterations (that's your album title right there), arbitrary pricing, ballet coincidences, power in ambiguity and art in application to music. Lovely stuff all in all - BUT - the questions at the end were relatively unsalvageable, so while you won't be able to make them out that well, hopefully the responses will allow for context. Apologies you're left to pick up the slack on those but they weren't available in the recordings so this was the best that could be done. See how you get on there anyway! Basically - the surface is scratched but the iceberg has much below the surface, to smash a couple of metaophors together. Pom's been involved in a lot of cinema and always delivers huge performances, obviously including Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, but along with the Guardians films, Suicide Squad, Westworld and loads more. Everything including process, hopes and dreams, basketball games with Spike Lee, working with Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise, and SO much more. Seriously - if you don't know Pom yet, get to know. 01:16:46||Ep. 678Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the very hilarious comic, writer and podcaster MARK WATSON!You can go ahead and add "long overdue guest" somewhere in the salutation there too, as Mark is someone who's been missing from the DPP alumni for way too long. Mark's been busy performing comedy all around the globe for a minute, and at some point you will have heard Pip proclaim his love for 'No More Jockeys' - the theme quiz with Tim Key, Alex Horne and Mark, so you'll likely know him from at least one point of entry. If not, fear not, as this is a lovely chat where no former knowledge is required! Pip and Mark go into several menu items including the perils of being 40+ (get your ailments bingo card prepped), peeing in odd places like a regular stray dog, getting lifts with parents as an adult, famous contacts in one's phone, riders at shows (ie backstage snax, beverages and more), surprise Mum spottings, squeezing material out of rugged situations when it might be better to just not have the situation, and his new podcast project (link below). 677. ABUBAKAR SALIM • conducting a perfect symphony of acting and game design (House Of The Dragon / Raised By Wolves / Tales Of Kenzera) #677
01:05:14||Ep. 677Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the awesome actor and now also game designer ABUBAKAR SALIM!What an absolute gem of an episode you have before you right here, as Pip checks in with Abubakar, one of the most power-move making-est actors in the game. You'll likely/surely recognize him from House Of The Dragon (Alyn of Hull), or Raised By Wolves (serving iconic costume realness), but chances are you might have also come into contact with his game 'Tales Of Kenzera' too. Even if none of those ring any bells, Abubakar is someone you'll get along with from jump, and has tales and perspective for days - working with Ridley Scott and what that process taught him, how the House Of The Dragon casting came about (crank call instincts on high alert), and how the inclusion of game design factored into life. A lovely chat with loads to enjoy for wherever you connect in those touchpoints, so enjoy!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBINSTAGRAMHOUSE OF THE DRAGONRAISED BY WOLVESTALES OF KENZERASPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDB
PROFESSOR GREEN (rap / TV & film / mental health advocacy) • Friday Rewind
01:27:22|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Professor Green, originally episode 223 from 2018-08-15.Original writeup below:As always with the Distraction Pieces Podcast, the chat does most definitely NOT focus on the main aspect you might be expecting, but covers a crazy amount of ground in the time the two have. And what a range on offer… Mr Green is clearly suffering from the after effects of some good time fun (with mate Example) the previous night but comes through it in fine form, leaping from topic to topic with ease, including how hard it must be to be a horrible bastard, the current state of society, news overload, the loss of hands-on skills, his insane experiences in solitary (for documentary reasons), dealing with the stress and fear of negative emotions, feeling the feels and not using crutches, troubled past, how folk can become comfortable and not take part in society, the greater subject of dogs and his own documentary work on what are considered difficult breeds, education, role models, Brexit, his touring days with Lily Allen and the difference in live music these days. All with tons in between of course. So dig deep and enjoy this in depth chat with Professor Green!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting naturePROFESSOR GREENMUSICINSTAGRAMDISCOGRAPHYCOUNT ON YOU on YOUTUBEPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE
676. RYAN CONDAL • how to train your house of dragons, or, flight of the Condal (House Of The Dragon / Colony / Rampage) #676
57:53||Ep. 676Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the fabulous writer and director RYAN CONDAL!A genuine treat for anyone in the least bit invested in all things Game Of Thrones and House Of The Dragon lore. Pip catches up with someone who is dealing with one of the tasks in recent times, which is showrunning a series with much expectation on its head. With past success and proven track record, turns out the hands it's in are very safe indeed, but nevertheless it is fascinating to hear how the whole thing is assembled and taken from writing room to screen. As you would expect, it takes a long time and there are no shortcuts, but what a pleasure in a time when so many shortcuts are made for us and the path is usually all about speed and quick results. So much goodness for the fans and appreciators in here, and those who are yet to begin their quest (god bless you!). As Ryan says, "We're not going to do the comfortable thing that you expect or want" - if that doesn't excite you, maybe House Of The Dragon isn't for you!
