Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip
Jess Thom (Tourettes Hero) - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #200
Welcome, welcome, welcome to EPISODE 200 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Hardcore die-hard listeners (aka Team 3W) will have heard the word ‘welcome’ WELL over 600 times so far at the start of the podcast so add those three from just now to the pile… A huge, incredibly appreciative and gracious thank you to all of you for tuning in, and being a part of the 11 million plus listens to the podcast so far! Anyway, without inhaling our own exhausts too much here, let’s get going - this one’s an amazing one, and truly a chat for this milestone episode - please welcome Jess Thom, performer, comedian and founder of Tourettes Hero!
Tourettes affects people in all kinds of different ways, but a key feature is the ‘tic’ - an involuntary sound made by the person, with the ‘motor tic’ being an involuntary movement. Jess has spent most of her life living with both, the condition developing in her teens to how it currently manifests itself. So as you will hear, Jess has her own unique tics - her main one is the word “biscuit”, but you’ll also hear “hedgehog”, “sausage” and a good few more. The sound accompanying them is her tapping her chest, just so you know what’s happening. What makes this a truly unique conversation is listening to Jess talk with Pip, who has a stutter. Not only that, we get to hear so much about Jess and her life, what moves her, how she got involved in the arts, and the world outside of her own condition. It’s a valuable insight into disability too, as she offers some wisdom regarding how she moves within society, seeing the world through different perspectives, and whether or not she would take a ‘magic pill’ to eliminate the condition. If that’s not enough, hear her enlightening talking points about relaxed theatre and what that is exactly, how she got involved and her own theatre performance in ‘Not I’ by Samuel Beckett (and how she got that off the ground in the first place), including a British Sign Language translation - tics and all! It’s also interesting to hear her say her thoughts are “tic-free” too - it can be easy to forget that part. Oh, and find out what a “buildup of biscuits” is too. You might be surprised. Enjoy this episode with Jess Thom!

673. AJA MONET • the surrealist blues poet defines the colour of rain ('The Color Of Rain' • 22 May on Drink Sum Wtr) #673
56:05||Ep. 673Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the incredible musician and poet AJA MONET!To use a couple of words to sum up the essence of someone is a strange thing indeed, and this subject comes up in this chat too. The idea of indentity versus what one strives for. This is most definitely an episode for the appreciators of the craft of poetry, but not ONLY that - it's more like a demonstration of why everything else around it matters so much, and how poetry is achieved by plugging into community, society, and life its very self. It's fascinating hearing about Aja's New York upbringing, and how exposure to the urban envrionment and the people within it helped cultivate the person she would grow into - Aja really does live and embody the life of a creator, and the self-proclaimed status of 'surrealist blues poet' is perfect indeed. You'll definitely get a huge amount from the chat if you yourself are involved in words, but if you're in the least bit creative and find that side of your life as crucial as air and water, you'll get so much from the chat. 672. AMAR CHADHA-PATEL • the sacred arts of world building and world burning (Willow / The Creator / The Decameron) #672
01:10:30||Ep. 672Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the fabulous acting talent that is AMAR CHADHA-PATEL!Bar after bar on this one, folks. You'll really enjoy it and that goes for everyone including those not necessarily focused on the world of the moving picture. Amar's been steadily building steam on his career path and as you'll hear here, is gradually owning the fact that he's really incredibly good at what he does. Which is NOT the opposite of humility. It's a sign of acknowledging growth, skill and accomplishment, and is refreshing to hear. But on top of that, there's so much in this chat including behind the scenes nuggets, how he approaches a one man theatre show, advice, mistakes, history, the Persian Empire (can have ONE WEEK where that doesn't come up??), and so much more. It's a lovely one which is hugely entertaining and informative, and packs in a lot in the run time. SAFDIE BROTHERS (Uncut Gems / The Smashing Machine / Marty Supreme) • Friday Rewind
41:10|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with the Safdie Brothers, originally episode 307 from 2020-01-15.Original writeup below:You may know them from the fantastic ‘Good Time’ (featuring a tightly wound Robert Pattinson), or maybe ‘Heaven Knows What’, but for sure you will be seeing much more of them with their new Netflix / cinema joint and Adam Sandler-starring ‘Uncut Gems’! Pip is a confirmed fan of course, and caught up with them on a very swift whirlwind run in London to talk all things film, from the time taken to get to this stage with the film, seeing the effect of it on an audience (especially comedically), the casting of Adam Sandler, the importance of voices, the use of extras in a far more involved sense, British acting and the realism of it, casting real people, working with musicians, using New York as a character, their intense focus on character even down to auditioning actors for one line appearances, and the sonic world of a film including the ‘Atmos’ mix which they go into. Amazing - proper film nerd’s one here and you’re not one, you might well be by the end. TOM GEORGE • the beauty of unmotivated camera movements (Two Weeks In August / Bait / See How They Run) #671
01:09:23|Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the awesome director and writer TOM GEORGE!A true nerd-out for the film heads right here, as Tom and Pip get it cracking from the beginning and do not let up. Tom's been ultra busy in recent times and all of this busy-ness is discussed, and it's really fascinating of course... Mixed in with the updates are some gems and jewels about the process and backstage bits and pieces that are truly worthy of note for those who enjoy the work on screen and appreciate the hows and whos of it arriving there. As you will expect there's some great 'Bait' chat involving Riz and Guz, a shared love of the one-shot and extended takes, how Tom found out about the See How They Run Bafta nom (cheers Pip!), allowing the script to do heavy lifting, and just an overall celebration of creativity, essentially. STEPHEN FRY (thou shalt not question Stephen Fry) • Friday Rewind
01:04:16|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Stephen Fry, originally episode 440 from 2022-05-02.Original writeup below:Simply using the term ‘national treasure’ doesn’t do any kind of justice whatsoever to who or what Stephen is, does and has done, of course. But it’s pretty tough to dispute. Long term (and casual) Pip listeners will already know the line ‘Thou shalt not question Stephen Fry’ - well, Pip breaks the holy rap commandment and does just that, and it’s a joy to behold. Naturally there’s only so many tips of icebergs one can introduce in an hour, but rest assured that you get the full Pip and Fry experience including pandemic times, social media, Greeks and Romans and history as a whole, tattoos, religion, politics - it’s like if you had a dinner party with him but condensed into a lunch break. So enjoy this hang time with Stephen and let’s hope that it only leads to more! 670. IZUKA HOYLE • the life and times of an immaculate action hero (Prisoner / Boiling Point / Big Boys) #670
53:09||Ep. 670Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the absolute superstar of screens of all sizes IZUKA HOYLE!A super delightful pick-me-up of an episode, featuring a true action star but someone who is infinitely capable of delivering whatever the role requires. Izuka and Pip share many mutual friends and this is where the chat excels, as through the miracle of telephone technology (okay let's walk that back a bit - two voice messages), we get to travel down a new portal in the conversation which is a lovely little distraction. Elsewhere though, of course we get to hear about all things stunt and action through 'Prisoner' and what that brought to the table, being handcuffed to a scene partner (and the important of chemistry in such a scenario), working on Jack Rooke's 'Big Boys', and how the whole acting world was approached and landed upon. RUTGER BREGMAN (Utopia For Realists / Humankind / Moral Ambition) • Friday Rewind
01:23:44|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Rutger Bregman, originally episode 190 from 2018-02-21.Original writeup below:An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of bullshit’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. 669. ADEEL AKHTAR • "dig where you stand" (Mass / Four Lions / Down Cemetary Road) #669
48:56||Ep. 669Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by acting great ADEEL AKHTAR!There's no doubt that this is a very special episode, as you have rightfully come to expect from Distraction Pieces. But there's a feeling of almost meditation on this one, a sense of two people building a very detailed structure of conversation and being in total flow state with it, while all the time the door is open for everyone listening (as opposed to two people having a locked-off personal catch up, you know?). Adeel has clearly done a lot of thinking and indeed meditating on this craft of acting, and so much of it is present here as he and Pip get into all aspects of the game, including the process itself and the myriad facets within, the art and mechanics of theatre acting versus screen acting and the subtle alterations that are necessary, and the idea of requiring permission to pivot or try something new when you might already be exactly where you need to be. As Adell quotes, "dig where you stand". What's also perfect is that he joined Pip for this chat while he was on break from rehearsing for 'Mass', which is also talked about in here. Pure craft on display. Oh and also please check the Music Boutique link below - more details in the ep.
