Allen Hughes & Jimmy Iovine - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #197
Ep. 197
•
Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 197 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! By now hopefully you’ve dried your eyes since last week’s powerfully emotional CryFest, the Hardcore Listing takeover with the Top Five Songs That Make You Cry, and are now ready to take on your next episode of Distraction Pieces - and indeed this is a grand one… A two parter of sorts, wrapped into one tight package, as Pip is joined by film director Allen Hughes and music producer and entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine consecutively!
By now you may have seen the documentary packaged entitled ‘The Defiant Ones’ show up in your Netflix new arrivals - you peeped it yet? Well best believe you will be after listening to this… Directed by Allen Hughes (maybe you know him from Menace II Society but his filmography is VAST and amazing), it’s a four part (not four episode, as Hughes will tell you!) series documenting the beginnings of the Dre multiverse, Interscope Records, Beats, and all things legendary music producer Jimmy Iovine - we’ll get to him…! You know you’re in safe hands with Hughes, and it really is a glorious representation of a world that you will know parts of but certainly not the whole story… So with this episode of Distraction Pieces, you are treated to a half hour sit-down with the director himself, then swiftly followed by another half hour chat with the superstar behind the scenes Jimmy Iovine! Jimmy’s worked with a ridiculous list of people. Just ridiculous. I mean John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Dr Dre is a good start but when you start reading down the list, it is genuinely mind-blowing. So do that!! Add to that his record label action and the Beats By Dre element, and there you have a true business champ who was responsible for so much in not only rap music but rock and just an insane amount more… Ground gets covered, stories get told, philosophies and gems of knowledge get dropped - a pure treasure of goodness for your ears and your mind. TOO MUCH goodness. Check ‘The Defiant Ones’ on Netflix immediately if not soon!

694. NATALIE IMBRUGLIA • 'Algorithm' out now! (Beth Brennan from Neighbours / Firebird / Torn) #694
01:11:48||Ep. 694Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the star of stage and screen NATALIE IMBRUGLIA!For those of a certain age who grew up in a certain era, Natalie will be like a familiar friend or relative. Neighbours was one of the biggest Australian exports around the early 90's and essential after-school viewing on one of the 4 or 5 channels the UK had on terrestrial TV. Natalie played Beth Brennan, but later made a transition to music superstar with the undeniable hit song 'Torn' - a single that has survived very well through the ages. It's a pleasure to have her here in studio with Pip catching up on all things including all of the above, emerging as an incidental mental health advocate, recording processes, and all sorts of awesome stuff that maybe you're not expecting. It's a really great one, this - oh and also, you'll get to hear Natalie's reaction to Pip's bold, bold claim he played guitar on 'Torn'. Chances are you are a diehard dyed in the wool Auntyhead, but perhaps you may have only just seen that Netflix square scrolling sideways in your field of vision as recent as today - or maybe this is the first time you’ve heard the word Aunty and the name Donna together full stop. Well prepare to either get to know the gang much better, or make some new best friends, as Pip catches up with three of the crew! You’ll hear a ton from their early days right up to now, and this will ensure that you are well versed in all things Donna - covering Run The Jewels with times tables, going from podcast to stage to screen, Dominos Pizza (and a gang of fast food snack trivia), tall poppy syndrome, fanbases, physical humour, finding the truth, being present, “whatever’s funniest” and the relentless search for perfection in TV production, as well as a bunch of behind the scenes bits and pieces besides. 693. HANNAH WALTERS • 'Amazing Grace' coming soon... (Matriarch Productions / A Thousand Blows / Adolescence) #693
01:16:22||Ep. 693Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the wonderful actor, producer and all round legend HANNAH WALTERS!Hannah's appearance is a long time coming, some might even venture to say overdue, but this is someone who is of course always welcome. A really fun and also very focused chat which hits on so many of the points you would hope for and very likely so much more, including the powerful work put out by her company Matriarch Productions (co-founded with husband Stephen Graham), how to navigate the desire to act alongside parenting and being married to a full time actor, the very delicate dance of accents, and her pivotal role in the (at time of publishing) upcoming 'Amazing Grace'. So much goodness in here and just a solid classic DPP episode. Enjoy! KONNIE HUQ (Cookie & The Most Annoying Boy In The World / podcasts) • Friday Rewind
01:23:22|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with KONNIE HUQ, originally episode 278 from 2019-07-17.Original writeup:The weather conditions at the time of podcasting (monsoon season) seem to make for a perfect sit down and chat session with Pip and Konnie, as the two hunker down and address a whole gang of pertinent issues and situations - which starts quite literally moments into the conversation. This all sets the tone for some extremely entertaining and very mind opening topic tackling, which includes such menu items as the smoking ban and how we all adapted, the issue of stuff and things and the accumulation of possessions, moving house to a shoebox (with kid in tow), social media and the multitude of attitudes towards it (including where they stand on it all), the idea of manners on social media and how people conduct themselves, minorities, sexual preference, change and evolution in society, being the first Bangladeshi presenter of Blue Peter, slow progression, the bullshit filter of being a parent, the importance of nomalising inclusivity, pasta tangents and of COURSE, her own podcast ‘Switch Off’ and forthcoming book ‘Cookie And The Most Annoying Boy In The World’! SO MUCH GOODNESS. Listen in!PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureONLINEINSTAGRAMPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDB
692. STAMMA FEST PODCAST • a Q&A with Jessie Roux fielding questions from awesome young folks #692
47:28||Ep. 692Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week is a celebration of INTERNATIONAL STAMMER AWARENESS DAY, recorded at Stamma Fest 2026!A wonderfully different episode this week, as Pip joins hosting duties with the glorious (previous guest!) JESSIE ROUX to answer questions and just have a nice hangout with some of the younger folks involved in Stamma Fest. You'll very quickly detect that this episode is more about the community vibe, support network and representation that comes with such an event and organisation, and less about the fact that there's a huge and fabulous TV star in attendance (although come on, that does add to the greatness!). Not to mention the fact that we're hearing from younger people who stammer - voices we don't hear from nearly as much as we should. It's a really supportive, present, and inspiring atmosphere in this one, and a very welcome break from the regular podcasting schedule. Here's to more of these voices in the future... Huge thanks to everyone at Stamma, the young people involved, and Jessie for all being amazing. SUZY EDDIE IZZARD (The Tragedy Of Hamlet / Watson / Dr Jekyll) • Friday Rewind
57:47|emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with SUZY EDDIE IZZARD, originally episode 168 from 2017-09-13.Original writeup (for context, this is from 2017, and now it is 2026 - so what follows is 9 years old, at time of this Rewind publishing):This week Pip is joined by EDDIE IZZARD! Comedian, actor, marathon man and all round champ Eddie takes time from his current press junket to sit down with Pip for a proper chat - not a three minute soundbiter, no no no... This is a wonderful one, covering - of course - his current film 'Victoria And Abdul' (alongside acting royalty Dame Judi Dench), which triggers all manner of talking points in bright and breezy fashion... Some amazing facts and gossip about the true story behind the film are revealed, and later Eddie talks candidly about his insane marathon running achievements and the mindset involved, and of course his standup career gets a good going over - all this tied in with a truly inspiring look at his transgender identification and all that has entailed over the years. Comprehensive to say the very least - get into it, enjoy and share it at your nearest opportunity.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureONLINEINSTAGRAMPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITTERPIP IMDB
691. LEILA FARZAD • bring the truth and unblock the emotion (I Hate Suzie / Black Mirror / The Decameron) #691
01:31:34||Ep. 691Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the absolutely glorious actor LEILA FARZAD!Leila's been on a huge journey in carving her own path in the wide and weird world of acting, a journey that some might have simply clicked and saved at any part of it and called it a day. But it's a real treat to hear how it's all turned out (and indeed continues to play out in the present), and to have that reminder that it isn't all luck and the hands we're dealt - this stuff takes a huge amount of thought, risk, skill and time. Hear about how Leila has worked on all sizes of screen as well as stage, found methods to unblock emotion, and had the unique experience of having a place to call home in Iran as well as the UK (or as Pip's unintentional phone autocorrect would have it, "ENGLAND" - don't worry, it all gets explained in the first few minutes, way to go phone). It's a really lovely conversation and a nice extended one too, so get settled and enjoy hearing from a true great.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureIMDBBLACK MIRROR: JOAN IS AWFULI HATE SUZIEINSTAGRAMSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDB

Today, we catch up with KAE TEMPEST, originally episode 17 from 2015-02-04.This is an episode from a very, very long time ago, but an incredibly fascinating one which offers an insight into a past life of someone who is very near and dear to the Distraction Pieces Podcast! As you will hear, it's an episode with references to a different name which was in use at the time - an occasional feature of the Rewind podcasts, what with this one in particular being almost 12 years old at time of publishing, so it might happen from time to time. But just know, Kae is the homie and always will be, and you are always strongly urged to peep his music at any given opportunity. 690. SOPHIE DUKER • new book 'DONG' in early 2027! (Taskmaster / Fringe / House Of Games) #690
01:09:58||Ep. 690Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the always excellent writer and comic SOPHIE DUKER!A mere couple of years since Sophie's previous visit to the podcast but so much has happened - but this is someone who frankly has a backstage laminate and is always welcome. A really lovely chat and catchup after what was a pretty tough Eurostar journey from Paris, in which she and Pip get into all things present, past and future (some of which were - at the time - huge news - and have since developed in ways they of course would not have known!). There's a lot of really decent Edinburgh Fringe talk too which is something Sophie's very familiar with, but generally this is one of those conversations where a huge amount of ground is covered and time passes way too quickly. So take some time and enjoy, it's a great one.
