This week, we're discussing the2011 Tohoku Earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster that would occur at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. A magnitude 9 earthquake would strike the island nation, bringing with it tsunami of up to 133 feet in height and washing away entire towns. These very same waves would over wash the protective barriers at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and would lead to the eventual meltdown and release of radioactive material into the environment. Persistent drought, worldwide conflict, and abusive farming practices would lead to desolate lands. Over 4 million barrels of oil would leak over nearly 90 days, covering over 1,000 miles of gulf coastline. This week, we're going to take another look at the Bhopal Industrial Accident. This disaster is regarded as the worst environmental disaster in recorded history. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, a toxic cloud of Methyl Isocyanate would kill over 3,000 and that number would only continue to skyrocket as the hours passed into days, weeks, and months. In total, it is estimated that nearly 30,000 were killed as a result, and over 500,000 suffered injuries, some lifelong as a result of this disaster.
