Dan Snow's History Hit
Knights vs Ottomans: The Great Siege of Malta
The fate of the Mediterranean hung in the balance during this bloody battle between the Knights of St John and the armies of Suleyman the Magnificent in the summer of 1565. The Ottoman Empire had carved its way across three continents and now turned its sights to the tiny island of Malta. Tens of thousands of Ottoman troops descended. What followed was one of the most ferocious sieges of the 16th century: relentless bombardments, desperate hand-to-hand fighting and assaults on seemingly impregnable forts. Both the attackers and defenders were pushed close to breaking point.
Dan is joined by Heritage Malta curator Kirsty Grech at Fort St Angelo - the Knight's headquarters during the siege - to tell the extraordinary story of bloodshed, resistance and survival.

1853. Medieval Ghost Stories
27:55||Ep. 1853Ghost stories have haunted conversations since ancient times, from the Mesopotamians to the Romans to the Vikings. The medieval period was particularly awash with ghost stories - after all, it was an era of great plague, piety and corporal punishment. Ghost stories served as useful tools to uphold hierarchies and manipulate the masses - live in accordance with the bible or be visited by a restless spirit... or become one yourself. To delve into some of the most popular ghost stories of medieval Britain and what the restless dead can tell us about the anxieties of the living, Dan is joined by Dr Eleanor Janega, historian and host of the Gone Medieval podcast.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Natasha Hughes.Sign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts. 1852. Charles de Gaulle: The Man Who Rebuilt France
01:15:49||Ep. 1852In June 1940, France was collapsing. Paris was in enemy hands, the government had fled, and Marshal Pétain was preparing to surrender. 1851. The Louisiana Purchase
48:39||Ep. 1851In 1803, with the stroke of a pen, the United States practically doubled in size overnight. It was a bold, $15 million real estate deal that would shape the destiny of the young nation - but most of the people living in the territory didn't even know it had happened.Dan Snow is joined by Professor Jacob Lee of Penn State University to explore how a single, secret deal became one of the most consequential turning points in modern history.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Tim Arstall. Our subscribers can contact us with their ideas and suggestions at the exclusive email: dshh.suggestions@historyhit.com.We need your help! 1850. The Myths vs Reality of Mummification
44:22||Ep. 1850From the elaborate burial rituals of Ancient Egypt to Victorian mummy unwrapping parties, mummification has fascinated humanity for centuries. But what is mummification really about? Because Hollywood, supernatural folklore and popular culture have muddied our understanding of the real history behind this burial practice. Dan is joined by Dr Campbell Price, Egyptologist and curator of Egypt and Sudan at the Manchester Museum to unravel (pun intended) the myths and misconceptions around Ancient Egyptian mummification and explore the morbid curiosity the Romans, Greeks and Victorians all had for this mysterious practice.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Natasha HughesSign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts.
