DR can develop in anyone living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and other types of diabetes, such as LADA. In 2020, an estimated 103 million adults had diabetic retinopathy (DR), and over 47 million had vision-threatening retinopathy requiring prompt treatment to preserve vision.

Although it has traditionally been thought of as a condition that primarily affects children, new figures show that three in five new cases in 2022 were in people aged 20 and older. So, what's the story behind the statistics, and what do we really know about the evolution of type 1 diabetes across the globe?
