The garlic bread and olives of Australia and the Middle East are done and the main course of single-day racing in northern Europe is about to be served. Chris, David and Gary look ahead to Openingsweekend and the Spring Classics in general.
đ¸ The single-day race first known as Omloop Van Vlaanderen was first held in 1945, becoming the somewhat more familiar Het Volk two years later before adopting its current guise as Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in 2009. The 1947 edition was won by the man shown here, Albert Sercu, pictured after winning that yearâs Dwars door BelgiĂŤ (Dwars door Vlaanderen today), just a week earlier. If you think the family name sounds familiar then youâd be right. Albertâs son who was 2 years old when the photo was taken would go on to dominate the six-day track scene, as well as being a multiple Giro and Tour stage winner. His name? Patrick, of course. 01:17:52||Season 5, Ep. 6Mama Mia! Milan-San Remo has not disappointed, from Pogiâs Poggio power to Cipressa carnage to a whole lotta Lotte doubters made schtum and all of it leaving us almost equally so. This is hardly ideal considering thereâs an hour of podcast time to kill so we talk about some other stuff too. What did we learn from Tirreno and Paris-Nice? No bull with Isaac Del Toro, thatâs for sure (oh, come on, everyone else has used it) but Visma-Lease-a-Bike seemingly have no shortage of moaning as well as a future title sponsor. We look ahead to more Flanders racing and also discover that Calalunya could be a bigger deal than we at first thought this season. All this plus culturally-insensitive climbs and news from Simpson-Nouvellesâ 2026 home debut at the ANEXO/CAMS Cicle Classic.đ¸ Before the introduction of the Poggio in 1960 and the Cipressa in 1982, the Passo del Turchino was considered the decisive point of Milan-San Remo rather than the gateway to the Ligurian coast, where the modern race truly begins. The photo shows riders cresting del Passo during the 1922 edition, a race won by Giovanni Brunero, the first of his 3 victories in La Classicissima di primavera.(Credit: Fondazione Pirelli.)RecommendationsIâve Had a Rose Letâs Talk About Feelings with Sam Lake https://shows.acast.com/ive-had-a-rose-lets-talk-about-feelings-with-sam-lakeWith a Little Help from my Friends - A Tribute to Matt Long https://mattlongtributealbum.bigcartel.comSimpson Nouvelles Cycling Scholarship - https://gofund.me/32eacc351 Get in touchDrop us a line at cyclinglegendspodcast@gmail.com! Interview: Beth Duryea - Canyon//SRAM at 10
45:13|Hard to believe, but itâs now ten years since the bright, unmistakable colours of Team Canyon//SRAM burst onto the Womenâs WorldTour. Since then, theyâve stacked up more than ninety wins, a world title in the team time trial, over thirty national championships, six Grand Tour stage victories, and - of course - that incredible Tour de France Femmes win in 2024.As they prepared for this seasonâs traditional Openingsweekend, Canyon//SRAM zondacryptoâs Marketing and Communications and Sports Director, Beth Duryea spoke to Gary from the teamâs training camp in Spain to look back at the first ten years of one of pro cyclingâs biggest - and most vibrant - teams.Music: âStarry Eyesâ by A Month of Sleep, courtesy of www.epidemicsound.com.Get in touchDrop us a line at cyclinglegendspodcast@gmail.com! 59:52||Season 5, Ep. 3Is something rotten in the state of Denmarkâs GC heroâs team? Just what does it take to impress Roger De Vlaeminck? Not an eighth world cyclocross title, it appears. Have cycling fans gone mad (again)?Chris, David and Gary ponder all this and more in the latest Feed Zone.đ¸ He is perhaps regarded more highly as a coach/DS, but with no fewer than 4 Tour de France winners under his tutelage, Cyrille Guimard was no slouch on the bike, winning 7 Tour de France and 2 Vuleta a Espana stages between 1970 and 1974.
