Gear for Film & Video Editors

Season 2, Ep. 15

Episode 15 is all about Erwann and Piotr’s gear. They talk about what equipment they use in their home suites and even what they bring to onsite jobs. Erwann loves his mouse and so does Piotr! They run through their headphones, speakers, mics, keyboards, monitors and even touch on control surfaces, stream decks, kitchen timers and something about a new foot pedal contraption. To be clear - fancy equipment or even a lot of equipment do not prove that you are a good editor. All the gear the guys have now, they’ve accrued overtime and are comfortable with and that’s what makes the difference. Also, Piotr mentions Parkinson’s Law in regards to time management and they share the stand-out movies from their week - Piotr - Kramer vs Kramer; Erwann - “Infestation”

What gear are you rocking?

  • 16. Experimental vs Incidental Learning

    15:24||Season 2, Ep. 16
    In this quick episode, Piotr uses learning to ride his electric unicycle BACKWARDS as an analogy to discuss with Ricky the way we learn editing. The words intentionally, incidentally, experimentally and accidentally are thrown around, but what it boils down to is that being a good editor isn't something you learn in a book; It's something that comes with years of doing it repeatedly; finding out new things along the way by accident or experimentation. Also, in this episode we hear about Ricky's house-moving whoas, his trip to Copenhagen and watching Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Plus, Piotr mentions the Polish Netflix series, 1670.Can you ride a unicycle backwards?--Here are links to a few of the things mentioned in this episode:Electric unicycle - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_unicycleIntentional vs Incidental Editing - https://typeset.io/questions/what-are-the-differences-between-incidental-and-intentional-901555hj2sMission Impossible: Rogue Nation - https://boxd.it/5rI41670 - https://www.netflix.com/de-en/title/81553471--We'd love to hear from you!Questions? • 11. Trailer Talk & Go To Editors

    49:41||Season 2, Ep. 11
    Episode 11 finds Ricky, Piotr and Erwann start off talking about the trailer Ricky’s cutting for a feature film with no dialogue. To title card or not to title card? Erwann, who’s cut many trailers for French TV and action-films, gives advice and insight on cutting a compelling and honest trailer. The dudes go down a rabbit hole of dishonest trailers, trailers that are better than the films and then, surprisingly, YouTube watch-time. There’s talk of maybe changing the podcast to “Trailer Talk.” Then Erwann leads a conversation about The Go-To-Editor (not a sponsor) and how professional development programs like it and others positively impacted their lives and careers.  It’s more than just improving your skills, there’s a community ripe with new friendships and professional connections, People! And surprise! We talk about imposter syndrome! Ricky and Erwann mention how it’s anxiety inducing breaking the ice at meet-ups and talking to editors/ directors you admire. Per-usual, they wrap the episode with watch lists; Ricky - Mad God and Mississippi Burning; Erwann - Rapid Fire, Ghost Busters: Frozen Empire and Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Piotr reads a book: Humiliated and Insulted by Fyodor Dostoevsky.Links to most of what we mentioned in the episode:The Go-To Editor - https://thegotoeditor.thinkific.com/The Editing Chef - https://cuttothepoint.thinkific.com/Every Frame a Painting - https://www.youtube.com/user/everyframeapaintingThe Dunning-Kruger Effect - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effectPassengers - https://boxd.it/8lFuWhere The Wild Things Are - https://boxd.it/1K0CMad God - https://boxd.it/vVPmMississippi Burning - https://boxd.it/28r8Rapid Fire - https://boxd.it/1QI6Ghost Busters: Frozen Empire - https://boxd.it/AxYuBad Boys: Ride or Die - https://boxd.it/l3KiHumiliated and Insulted by Fyodor Dostoevsky - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humiliated_and_Insulted--We'd love to hear from you!Questions? • 10. Edit Feedback (can editors/directors get by without it?) and Cate Blanchett (says she's middle class. no, seriously)

    54:36||Season 2, Ep. 10
    Episode 10 - we’re into double digits folks!Erwann and Ricky fill in Piotr on meeting up in Paris. They go deep on discussing their thoughts about Piotr’s latest Cut to the Point video: “Why Editing Feedback is Key for your Film (Especially if You’re the Director).” The guys go back and forth on whether directors should even edit their own films and how they’ve convinced directors to work with them in the past. Piotr edited the short film he wrote/directed and Erwann asks if, in hindsight, Piotr should’ve had someone else edit it. The guys then touch on their process before diving into the edit. Then they comment how Cate Blanchett was named jury president of the main competition at Camerimage 2024, the film fest that celebrates cinematographers. Did you know she considers herself “middle class?” The dudes riff on that, too. Then they get into movie watch lists - Piotr watches Punch Drunk Love and the Polish film, Sonata (spoiler alert), Ricky is still watching Fallout and Erwann saw The Old Oak and cried. To conclude, Piotr and Erwann talk about American Fiction which Ricky still hasn’t seen.
