Erwann's Editing a Series!
34:28||Season 2, Ep. 21Episode 21 and Erwann is back from his vacation! He shares with Piotr and Rick how it’s been cutting a TV series for the first time. Erwann talks about how he got the job, creating the films grammar, working with a progressive shortage of coverage and other challenges, plus working with a composer for the first time. The discussion leads Piotr into mentioning the latest video from Every Frame a Painting on YouTube about sustained two-shots. There’s a little back and forth about the evolution of shot length and the way actors convey emotion. From there they get into Ricky putting up sound proofing in his new home editing suite. Then Erwann asks the guys to share one movie/ show from the watchlist that week and Ricky gives three...What’s your favorite TV series right now?—Here are link to some things mentioned in the episode:DCPomatic: https://dcpomatic.comEvery Frame A Painting - The Sustained Two-Shot: https://youtu.be/mn2Dcy-NDTw?si=Cejm2hBnkM8tOVWfCold Little Bird - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21654496/?ref_=ext_shr_lnkDoctor Who - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt31433814/?ref_=ext_shr_lnkRussel T. How Editing Informs Directing
30:42||Season 2, Ep. 20We’re out of our teens into our twenties this season. Episode 20! Piotr and Ricky respond to a listener question about how editing informed Piotr directing his short film, “Yellow Ticket.” Prepare for some good anecdotes, plus a George Romero reference. Piotr congratulates Ricky on winning Besting Editing for his work on “Holding These Moments” at the Palma Film Festival in Mallorca. Then they get into their weekly watch-list.What’s your favorite non-zombie George Romero film?—Links to few things mentioned in this episode:Yellow Ticket - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt28756177/?ref_=ext_shr_lnkGeorge Romero - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_A._RomeroHolding These Moments - https://boxd.it/sg1YPalma Film Festival - https://palmafilmfestival.com/category/winners/february-june-winners/Furiosa - https://boxd.it/tABkPorco Rosso - https://boxd.it/1Tp2--We'd love to hear from you!Questions? The Droid Olympics & Stuff
33:15||Season 2, Ep. 19In episode 19, Ricky and Piotr start off by making fun of Erwann then talk about Camerimage International Film Festival in Torún, Poland. Hopefully Ricky can attend with Piotr this November. After that they give shout-outs to podcast listeners Khalid and Robert for sending in constructive feedback and thanks. If you guys are reading this description you are much appreciate. Piotr and Ricky then make fun of Erwann in the Olympics and discuss how mind-blowing post-production must be for the games. This brings up a 2005 article, that Ricky found written by Paul Hirsch, ACE reminiscing about The Droid Olympics, a competition amongst assistant edits in the late 70’s to early 80s. A fun look back at a hidden time in film history. Piotr then talks about how he used the Milanote app to break down a possible film project into individual cards on a digital board, similar to how great editors like Walter Murch will use photos and post-it notes to see a films structure. After which Piotr mentions that LOST, his favorite TV Shows is now on Netflix and Ricky talks about how great of an edit The Bear S3 Episode 2 is. They get into how he prepares for interviews, how over 360 interviews with top editors have influenced his own work and the 3 common traits of great editors. Steve also shares the edit/ film making books he always goes back to, a great bad-client story and how he literally cut and pasted together the first volume of Art of the Cut! Experimental vs Incidental Learning
15:24||Season 2, Ep. 16In this quick episode, Piotr uses learning to ride his electric unicycle BACKWARDS as an analogy to discuss with Ricky the way we learn editing. The words intentionally, incidentally, experimentally and accidentally are thrown around, but what it boils down to is that being a good editor isn't something you learn in a book; It's something that comes with years of doing it repeatedly; finding out new things along the way by accident or experimentation. Also, in this episode we hear about Ricky's house-moving whoas, his trip to Copenhagen and watching Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Plus, Piotr mentions the Polish Netflix series, 1670.Can you ride a unicycle backwards?--Here are links to a few of the things mentioned in this episode:Electric unicycle - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_unicycleIntentional vs Incidental Editing - https://typeset.io/questions/what-are-the-differences-between-incidental-and-intentional-901555hj2sMission Impossible: Rogue Nation - https://boxd.it/5rI41670 - https://www.netflix.com/de-en/title/81553471--We'd love to hear from you!Questions? Gear for Film & Video Editors
39:36||Season 2, Ep. 15Episode 15 is all about Erwann and Piotr’s gear. They talk about what equipment they use in their home suites and even what they bring to onsite jobs. Erwann loves his mouse and so does Piotr! They run through their headphones, speakers, mics, keyboards, monitors and even touch on control surfaces, stream decks, kitchen timers and something about a new foot pedal contraption. To be clear - fancy equipment or even a lot of equipment do not prove that you are a good editor. All the gear the guys have now, they’ve accrued overtime and are comfortable with and that’s what makes the difference. Also, Piotr mentions Parkinson’s Law in regards to time management and they share the stand-out movies from their week - Piotr - Kramer vs Kramer; Erwann - “Infestation”What gear are you rocking?--Here are links to most of the gear mentioned in the episode (not sponsors):Elgato USB-C Stream Deck - https://amzn.to/3zNL3MdElgato Stream Deck Pedal - https://amzn.to/3LvBqnKBeyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X LE On-Ear Headphones - https://amzn.to/466Pg9PLogitech MX Master 3 Advanced Wireless Mouse - https://amzn.to/3Y6xrFKKali Audio Studio Monitors - https://www.kaliaudio.com/product-line-up#Studio-MonitorsDigital Kitchen Timer - https://amzn.to/3SbnhjsTangent Element work panel - https://www.tangentwave.co.uk/product/element/Røde PodMic microphone - https://amzn.to/4cIQoTjFocusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface - https://amzn.to/46b6aEfParkinson's Law - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson%27s_lawKramer vs Kramer - https://boxd.it/h0wVermines (Infested) https://boxd.it/Egl4--We'd love to hear from you!Questions?
