The search for true home - Garry Disher

Ep. 47

An interview with Garry Disher has been on my Wishlist for so long so I am thrilled I got the chance to speak to him. Garry has written more than 50 books across different genres but he’s best known for his searing crime fiction. Garry was writing crime set in Australia for decades, long before rural or outback noir became popular or had the status that it does now.

My entry into Garry’s writing was the brilliant Bitter Wash Road, which introduced us to his character Constable Paul Hirschausen, a cop exiled to a rural community where he’s an outsider. There’s three books in the Hirsch series and Garry’s currently working on the next one.

His new book The Way it is Now introduces us to cop Charlie Deravin who is back in his coastal country hometown where the mystery of his mother’s disappearance 20 years before still hangs heavily.

The Way it is Now  is published by Text Publishing.

True Crime podcasts, teaching and the changing notions of identity: Kate McCaffrey

Ep. 63
Kate McCaffrey is an acclaimed author of young adult fiction and now she’s written her first adult novel. DOUBLE LIVES is a story within a story following Amy, Journalist trying to establish herself in Western Australia again after time away working in Melbourne. Amy has the idea to do a podcast and the season one case she focuses on is the murder of young transgender woman Casey Williams. Upon arrest, Casey’s boyfriend Jonah Scott confessed to her murder immediately and pleaded guilty. But Amy thinks there’s more behind this shocking crime and delves into the cult run by Jonah’s family and its potential involvement in Casey’s murder. The story explores identity, truth and acceptance in a compelling way. It’s my first time reading Kate’s work and I’ll be reading her young adult books, which have been on secondary school reading lists for a number of years.Disclosure: These show notes contain Booktopia affiliate links, meaning I get a little commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links, at no cost to you AND authors get a book sale (including me!). Find out more about Kate : https://katemccaffrey.org/Purchase DOUBLE LIVES  Produced and hosted by Emily Webb author of:Suburban True Crime: Cases you’ll never forget and some you’ve never heard of Suburban True Crime (audiobook)Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who Kill  Follow Emily on Twitter https://twitter.com/emilybwebbInstagram https://instagram.com/emilywebbcrimeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@emilywebbcrimeFacebook facebook.com/emily.webb.podcaster.authorWebsite: https://www.emilywebbcrime.com/Listen to Killer Content on:Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/killer-content-with-emily-webb/id1539843342Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9yc3MuYWNhc3QuY29tL2NyaW1lLWZpY3Rpb24tZnJpZGF5 Listen on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1gxxA7IcoTIcarh6sPgbEI

Mum had a stalker and it inspired my debut crime novel: Greg Woodland

Ep. 61
Greg Woodland is a scriptwriter, director and once upon a time…an aspiring punk rocker. After a number of his script projects, including one picked up by Disney, didn’t make it to production he turned to crime fiction to tell his stories. His debut THE NIGHT WHISTLER, dubbed a rural gothic noir, was actually adapted from a script he’d written and inspired in part from a real life crime his mum endured. His second book THE CARNIVAL IS OVER has a few characters carry over from The Night Whistler…and is set in the same fictionalised town in NSW’s New England region.Disclosure: These show notes contain Booktopia affiliate links, meaning I get a little commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links, at no cost to you AND authors get a book sale (including me!). Produced and hosted by Emily Webb author of:Suburban True Crime: Cases you’ll never forget and some you’ve never heard of Suburban True Crime (audiobook)Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who Kill  Follow Emily on Twitter https://twitter.com/emilybwebbInstagram https://instagram.com/emilywebbcrimeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@emilywebbcrimeFacebook facebook.com/emily.webb.podcaster.authorWebsite: https://www.emilywebbcrime.com/Listen to Killer Content on:Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/killer-content-with-emily-webb/id1539843342Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9yc3MuYWNhc3QuY29tL2NyaW1lLWZpY3Rpb24tZnJpZGF5 Listen on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1gxxA7IcoTIcarh6sPgbEI
