50 Years of Chelsea: 1971-72

The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Clayton Beerman to look back at the 1971-72 season.

Chelsea supporters went in to the 1971-72 season full of optimism. Chelsea had just won their second trophy in consecutive seasons and many both expected and hoped that a title challenge was on the cards.

But thanks to some poor transfers and a worse start to the season it was to be a disappointing season.

Bedeviled by the unrest of stars such as Peter Osgood and Alan Hudson and the season long injury to Ian Hutchinson, the league campaign was up and down all season culminating in a final position of 7th, Chelsea’s worst finish for 5 seasons.

The Cup competitions were not much better. Having beaten Jeunesse 21-0 on aggregate Chelsea, the European Cup Winners Cup holders, were unceremoniously dumped out in the second round by Atvidaberg on away goals. As a result Chelsea were booed off the pitch.

They didn’t fare much better in the FA Cup. With one defeat in 24 games and favourites for both cups, only a few points off 1st place in the league, Chelsea faced Division 2 Leyton Orient. Chelsea were 2-0 up and conspired to lose 3-2 to a screamer, a defensive mix up and a last-minute goal. There were many missed chances too and the fans invaded the pitch in an attempt to get it abandoned!

The one beacon of hope in the season was reaching the final of the League Cup against Stoke City featuring England legend and World Cup winning ‘keeper Gordon Banks. In spite of ‘Blue is the Colour’ recorded in Feb 1972 by Chelsea supporting producer Larry Page reaching no. 5 in the Charts; Chelsea’s complacent performance with defensive errors and a lack of urgency ended in defeat to Stoke. Little did we know then that this would be Chelsea’s last appearance at a Wembley final in a major competition for 22 years.

  • 1126. ‘Pathetic’ Chelsea FanCast #1126

    01:43:00
Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Dayne Whittle to look back at a very disappointing draw away to relegation bound Sheffield United. In part one we discuss one step forward, two steps back again; same shit, different day! By snatching a draw from the jaws of victory against lowly Sheffield Utd Chelsea once again showed a lack of leadership; lack of intensity; lack of ability; lack of football intelligence and a lack of motivation finessed with zero game management. But at least Silva and Madueke's fine goal provided some positives. In part two we ask questions of Pochettino. Did the change of formation work? Did he get the subs right? And what about his post match comments? Are the players really tired? Should they be? And why do they seem allergic to European qualification? Chelsea right now are reminiscent of the early '90's team poor against teams they should beat and great against teams they are not expected to beat. But should we be more patient? Right now it’s difficult isn't it?As we all know, it’s the hope that kills you.To get the best discount off your NordVPN plan go to https://nordvpn.com/chelseafancast. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Martin Wickham to look back at a crazy win against Man Utd and ahead to Sundays match against Sheffield Utd.In part one we look back at a crazy win against Man Utd in a euphoric Stamford Bridge. We discuss the great start but we knew it wouldn’t last.Stupid, stupid mistakes again by Moises and Badiashile – is there a case for Silva? The booing Mount and the Enzo v Mount clash. Palmer being superb and Madueke making an impact. And the old adage of never leaving early being proved again. Have Chelsea turned a corner? Nah, let’s just enjoy the joy!In part two, we welcome back Ben, the Travelling Blade in the Opposition View. We ask Ben has Chris Wilder made a difference? After conceding 80 goals this season, is teh Utd defence the issue? With Utd 10 points off 17th are they down with 8 games left? We wrap up asking Ben how he sees it going & what his prediction is.In part three, we preview Sheffield Utd v Chelsea. Kicking off with JK's Press Summary followed by Chidge's team selection. Should we stick or twist? Is their a case for Silva? Should Casadei start for Moises? The big question is will Chelsea a) not be up for it against a struggling team; b) fail to break down a team with a low block; c) shoot ourselves in the foot? Is Europe still within our grasp or should we stop talking about it? We wrap up by discussing how we see it going and give our predictions. And finally, 'They Played for Both'To get the best discount off your NordVPN plan go to https://nordvpn.com/chelseafancast. • 1123. ‘Indefensibly Inept’ Chelsea FanCast #1123

    01:31:29
Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Dan Silver to look back at Chelsea v Burnley and ahead to Chelsea v Man Utd.In part one we look at the inept finishing and faiing to break down a team in 19th position who were playing with 10 men for 55 minutes and the indefensible - ot defending the first goal; failing to defend another set piece goal and there should have been a third winning goal. Is the conclusion that some of our players are simply not good enough and likely never will be? We also discuss Neil Barnett's point to Pochettino about the possibility that players aged between 21 and 24 might not make it at a club.We wrap up part one comparing Chelsea's current midfield to various Chelsea midfield combinations between 1991 and 2024. Is our failure to dominate midfield the root of problem? In part two we salute Cole Palmer, the exceptional exception and Malo Gusto - two Clearlake signings who are definitely good enough. Frank LeBeouf seems to be channeling his inner JK and is not happy, but where is Poch in all this - is his position now indefensible? And with no European football next season is a storm brewing? Anyway, bollocks to the football, we had a great day off the pitch on Saturday and Chelsea for us is all about the people we go with and meet throughout the day.The worse it gets on the pitch the better it seems to be off it. Roll on Thursday! To get the best discount off your NordVPN plan go to https://nordvpn.com/chelseafancast.
