The Chase for 28

BONUS: Yankees Open Spring 2023 with Loss to Phillies (2/26/23)

Ep. 60

The New York Yankees played their first game of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida, over the weekend. Although they lost 7-4, many takeaways from the game were notable, including six in particular. Despite the introduction of new rules, including pitch clocks and shift restrictions, which are expected to change the game's dynamics, the Yankee's performance wasn't affected. The biggest highlight of the game was 20-year-old outfielder Jasson Dominguez, dubbed "The Martian," who hit a homer 420 feet to left-center field to lead off the fifth inning. Here are the five other takeaways from the game:

First, Dominguez is the youngest player at big-league spring training for the Yankees and is considered the second-best prospect in the team's organization. Manager Aaron Boone praised Dominguez's understanding and ease of the strike zone, saying he has "no panic up there."

Second, batters will need to adjust to the pitch clock, ensuring they're in the batter's box at the eight-second mark, and picking up signs from the third-base coach may prove challenging initially.

Third, the pitch clock will make pitchers work faster on the mound, which will benefit infield defenses. Infielders will be more engaged than ever, and infield positioning will change.

Fourth, Boone said there could be times when managers and umpires clash over the finer points of the new rules. There were some issues with the pitch clock resetting too soon during the game, which didn't give players enough time to get into their defensive positions.

Fifth, infielders can no longer stand on the outfield grass due to shift restrictions, which might require some getting used to.

Finally, despite Dominguez's impressive performance, he's focused on the task at hand and not on reaching the Bronx before the end of this season.

To win it all, the Dodgers had to give it all. Had to stare down an ugly early deficit. Had to empty their bullpen. Had to rally against Gerrit Cole and then against the Yankees’ best relievers. Had to get a World Series-clinching save from starter Walker Buehler, of all people. The Yankees were undone by a horrifying 5th inning.Box ScoreBullpen Q&A ☎️You have opinions just like we do so we want to hear from you!Email us at feedback@chasefor28.comConnect with us on Twitter @chasefor28podSend a voicemail http://chasefor28.com/voicemailMerch 👕Chase for 28 - Podcast and Select Player ShirtsSeatGeek 🎟Check out SeatGeek - the easiest way to buy tickets for sports, concerts, and more. They crammed in crowded 4 and D trains, packed the Bronx’s sports bars and streamed through the Yankee Stadium gates, ready to lend their voices to the comeback cause. But it took all of three batters for those pinstripe-clad fans to be quieted, all of three batters for the seemingly unstoppable Dodgers to assert themselves in one of the most intimidating road environments in sports.Box ScoreBullpen Q&A ☎️You have opinions just like we do so we want to hear from you!Email us at feedback@chasefor28.comConnect with us on Twitter @chasefor28podSend a voicemail http://chasefor28.com/voicemailMerch 👕Chase for 28 - Podcast and Select Player ShirtsSeatGeek 🎟Check out SeatGeek - the easiest way to buy tickets for sports, concerts, and more. And so the Yankees, who brought their band of slugging superstars to the West Coast, head east with a daunting deficit against a Dodgers team that had been an out away from angst in the opener, yet is now two wins from a ring. What remains to be seen is if the tone will shift at Yankee Stadium, and if Ohtani will be back in the lineup in the Bronx.Box ScoreBullpen Q&A ☎️You have opinions just like we do so we want to hear from you!Email us at feedback@chasefor28.comConnect with us on Twitter @chasefor28podSend a voicemail http://chasefor28.com/voicemailMerch 👕Chase for 28 - Podcast and Select Player ShirtsSeatGeek 🎟Check out SeatGeek - the easiest way to buy tickets for sports, concerts, and more. Thirty-six years after a gimpy Kirk Gibson limped to the plate to smack a Game 1 walk-off homer, Freddie Freeman came to bat with a badly injured right ankle, the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th and a chance to summon October magic of his own. With one, no-doubt swing, Freeman rocketed the ball into the right-field pavilion seats for the first-ever World Series walk-off grand slam that gave the Dodgers an epic 6-3 victory in a Game 1 thriller Friday night at Dodger Stadium.Box ScoreBullpen Q&A ☎️You have opinions just like we do so we want to hear from you!Email us at feedback@chasefor28.comConnect with us on Twitter @chasefor28podSend a voicemail http://chasefor28.com/voicemailMerch 👕Chase for 28 - Podcast and Select Player ShirtsSeatGeek 🎟Check out SeatGeek - the easiest way to buy tickets for sports, concerts, and more.
