Caught in Time
Theo Crous (Springbok Nude Girls)
Springbok Nude Girls are one of South Africa's most beloved rock bands, even now some 30+ years after forming. Their debut album, 'Neanderthal One', immediately captured hearts with the iconic single 'Bubblegum On My Boots' - and they became a household name with the bittersweet anthem 'Blue Eyes'.
Guitarist/songwriter Theo Crous has become one of South Africa's premier music producers and engineers, cutting his teeth alongside masters like Kevin Shirley before helming many award-winning records by bands like Fokofpolisiekar, AKing, Van Coke Kartel and many more. Theo has been a major part of my musical development, producing and engineering my very first recording, the Jimmy 12-Inch EP 'Diaphoraspora' featuring singles like 'Even Steven' and 'Shorn's Song.'
The accomplishments and adventures of Theo and SNG are too many to list here, so I recommend checking out their massive discography here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3hz6VscKnCkBeeeiy66Qzh?si=7gAqKc6IRVCnKfR0QibDWg

20. Bryan McLagan (AKA Wang) - The Finkelstiens
01:41:37||Season 1, Ep. 20The Finkelstiens were the funniest band onstage and wrote the catchiest pop punk tunes in SA. Seriously. They were actually quite annoying in how catchy they were. And in how funny. Wang and I had a funny old chat about soundtracking Crazy Monkey, winning awards, getting mobbed by fans and dissing Barry Hilton to his face. Legend.
19. Barry Van Zyl (Johnny Clegg, Ladysmith Black Mambazo)
57:32||Season 1, Ep. 19The insanely prolific South African drummer, percussionist and producer discusses his peerless career and life in South African and world music.
18. Dave Chislett (Music Journalist/Author/AntiGravity)
55:02||Season 1, Ep. 18Dave Chislett went from opening up for The Prodigy on their debut South African tour to being a major voice in SA music journalism, radio and band management. Progressing into public speaking, poetry and authorship, his thoroughly unique experience of and perspective on the South African music scene of the 90s and 00s made for a very interesting and refreshing conversation. Thank you to Dave for his time and patience getting this one over the line!Learn more about Dave's inspiring work here: https://davidchislett.com/
17. David Beretta Owens (Lithium/N8ive/Gimp/PitVirus)
01:49:28||Season 1, Ep. 17Dave Owens was/is the frontman for Lithium from Cape Town, a band who's reunited more than once but who I never got to see very often - despite their being one of my biggest early musical influences. He went on to form incredibly diverse projects including acoustic rockers N8ive, the nu-metal inspired Gimp, and most recently, the metallic PitVirus (alongside members of Vulvodynia). Lithium holds a special place in my heart, so this interview was an absolute joy to do! Thank you Dave.
CAUGHT IN TIME PODCAST UPDATE NOVEMBER 2025
04:59||Season 1A short update on where I've been, why I've been away and where Caught In Time is headed.

16. The South African Punk Rock Roundtable
02:14:30||Season 1, Ep. 16Chaos ensues as I talk to Jay Bones (Fuzigish), Jon Shaban (The Shabs), Pete Grey and DFG (Half Price) and journalist Cerven Cotter (Blunt Magazine SA, Distorted Magazine & Vehemence) about the history of South Africa's punk scene.FUZIGISHFUZIGISH // Punk Rock Reggae Misfits from South Africafuzigish.orghttps://fuzigish.orghttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5NOfiSV5NL7MVz8JO0oE1v?autoplay=trueFUZIGISHApple Musichttps://music.apple.com › artist › fuzigishTHE SHABShttps://theshabs.bandcamp.com/musichttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5cM8LtNIOE5PiNPUmJF4RM?si=auDzRvHwQeKMfXSva9cPaQhttps://music.apple.com/gb/artist/the-shabs/1218891093HALF PRICEhttps://www.halfpriceband.co.za/https://half-price.bandcamp.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/5hhxRKw2vy8rZkBltFtb1y?si=faZKpHHHTaa1CxXYhQRajQhttps://music.apple.com/gb/artist/half-price/297206342DISTORTED MAGAZINEhttps://issuu.com/distortedmagazine/docs/dec_2006https://issuu.com/distortedmagazine/docs/november_2007VEHEMENCE CLOTHINGhttps://vehemenceco.com
15. Hanu De Jong (Not My Dog, The Narrow)
01:59:59||Season 1, Ep. 15Hanu De Jong is a powerful force as a live vocalist and frontman, but his artistic evolution also matches his onstage presence.Progressing from brawling, beer-soaked 7-string riffs and mind-bending time shifts with Not My Dog, he formed melodic rock outfit The Narrow in the early 00s with his brother Emile (also a co-founder of NMD), proving beyond doubt his ability to craft epic, evocative melodies and a not insignificant set of vocal chops. Hanu is astute, funny, kind and focused on constantly creating - all of which came through clearly in this awesome conversation.NOT MY DOG:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@notmydogbandSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/7p5v2JRt5D9QjHn3u8h16T?si=MZ_2k3AARPKdySg-I2Wk5wApple Music: https://music.apple.com/gb/artist/not-my-dog/472990925THE NARROW:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@hanu0303Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/00hP5aJk3HbvFpXzcBeSl3?si=8enxa0wVQ32XLoUjw9D3bQApple Music: https://music.apple.com/gb/artist/the-narrow/299435311
14. The South African Nu-Metal Roundtable (Pestroy, 16Stitch & Marlowe)
02:32:14||Season 1, Ep. 14The South African scene wouldn't be what it was without community - and there were arguably no stronger examples than the metal and punk communities that spanned the country. While there was friendly competition, there was ultimately support and collaboration at every turn. That's the era I came up in, and so talking with these three friends was not only a hilarious treat, but also very meaningful as we reconnect after some 20 years.I'll let the episode do the talking...PESTROY:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTydtWH0kF2VQlV_DP3MFuQhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/3baf1D1VQZUemM5vrukbLW?si=zNQxpOh9Srub4qOPBOT7vwhttps://music.apple.com/gb/artist/pestroy/25487573016STITCH:https://youtu.be/3XglpfkD2wI?si=VvEwoiWLYa0TASxiNEWTOWN KNIFE GANG:https://www.youtube.com/@newtownknifeganghttps://music.apple.com/gb/artist/newtown-knife-gang/437204292MARLOWE:13 videosPlay allhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/4ZY49Da5Jtv8pfmea1XWdu?si=AkZRbZG8Q0iFKHp9g_zz3Ahttps://music.apple.com/gb/album/lines-from-the-broken-telephone/1377206148HOKUMhttps://www.youtube.com/@HOKUMBANDSAhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/06zsO0gfNuux6sp6vSYRBV?si=XoSrJ-gbSmyoOmUc883J4ghttps://music.apple.com/gb/artist/hokum/379976432
