As we discuss regularly in the news episode, there are lots of children in Ireland being let down by various systems and some of those children need a safe and caring home. That's where the foster care system comes in. Unfortunately there is a major shortage of foster carers in Ireland at the moment, so today I'm bringing you a chat with Eithne Larkin, Recruitment Lead with Origins Foster Care. Eithne has also been a foster carer herself for 23 years, so she is perfectly positioned to give us an idea of what kind of people make a good foster carer, and the impact it has on the lives of both the children and the carers. I found this conversation incredibly enlightening and moving, and I hope you do too.

If you're interested in continuing the conversation, you can contact Origins Foster Care here, or contact Eithne on 0870529749.

  • 452. Catch Up with Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen on Our Deadly Summer

    42:35||Season 1, Ep. 452
    How delightful to have regular contributor Emer McLysaght as a guest for this episode alongside her writing partner Sarah Breen. Emer and Sarah are responsible for the publishing phenomenon that is the Oh My God What a Complete Aisling books, and they've teamed up again for a new novel: Our Deadly Summer. We caught up on why they decided to stick together for this book, and why they didn't simply write another Aisling book, and the joy of writing a novel set in the heady nostalgia of the early 2000s. As I'm away, Carl Kinsella and I can't do the usual news round-up this week. Instead, we decided to highlight some reasons to be politically hopeful at a time when there are plenty of reasons to feel down in the dumps. We both felt more optimistic after recording this, and hope you do too.To support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here.
  • 450. Reality Catch-Up: Housewives Anthropologist and Journalist Brian Moylan

    58:24||Season 1, Ep. 450
    The minute I started reality Fridays I knew I wanted to talk to Brian Moylan. I've been reading Brian's Housewives recaps since I was a solo viewer with no one to talk to about what I was watching, and since then his significance in the culture has only grown. Aside from the recaps he writes for Vulture and his own Substack, he authored The Housewives: The Real Story Behind the Real Housewives, worked with Erika Jayne on her book Pretty Mess, and has presented countless panels at Bravocon and similar events. If you watch the Housewives or any Bravo shows, you will love this chat.To support the podcast and access bonus episodes, join the community on Patreon here.
