Sheffield United (A) Preview - Season 21/22, Episode 5

Season 2, Ep. 5
•

Following on from the league opener at the weekend, the Brunton Bugle is back to preview the midweek cup trip to Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup!

In this episode, Lee and Mike look ahead to the game, discussing a classic encounter with the Blades, players who have played for both clubs and whether both managers might look to make changes for the first cup tie of the campaign.

On top of that, there's a chat with Ben from BladesPod, who talks about the rollercoaster recent seasons at Bramall Lane and how a disrupted pre-season schedule means this game takes on a bit more meaning than it might have done.

There's no review of the Colchester game or news section - those will be coming in the Swindon preview later this week!

Your host Lee Rooney is in Liverpool and is joined via the wonders of the internet by Mike Booth in Formby. You can find us on Twitter @bruntonbugle, Facebook (search for "Brunton Bugle") and email us with any questions, suggestions and feedback to bruntonbugle@gmail.com.

    01:10:23||Season 7, Ep. 22
    Three away wins on the spin, our first comeback victory of the campaign, and the Blues are officially into the top half of the table! It was far from pretty in the dreadful weather at Damson Park, but United showed bags of character to turn things around in the second half and take all three points against Solihull Moors.Before dissecting the match, Lee and Dan start with some important off-field news - sending our collective love and very best wishes to Carlisle United legend Dean Walling following the recent announcement of his prostate cancer diagnosis. Once a Blue, always a Blue and remember - follow Deano's advice and if you are concerned, get yourself checked out at a Doctor. Find out more at Prostate Cancer UK's website.We then get stuck into the Solihull debrief: an ugly, rain-swept battle that turned completely on its head thanks to a decisive triple substitution on the hour mark. We look at Morgan Feeney becoming our first centre-back to find the net this season, David Ajiboye making an instant impact off the bench to grab the winner, strong displays from Richardson and Duru, and the grit required to grind out results when things aren't going your way.From there, attention shifts to Tuesday night under the Brunton Park lights as we welcome our ultimate bogey side, Harrogate Town. With United still searching for a first-ever league victory over the Sulphurites (our only previous win coming in that boycotted B-team trophy), we look at what makes them such a tricky customer. Plus, we discuss the remarkable takeover news at Wetherby Road - with manager Simon Weaver taking ownership of the club from his dad, Irving - and ask whether Harrogate are quietly emerging as this season's dark horses.Lots discussed in this episode, including:💙 Best Wishes to Deano: Sending our love and support to Blues legend Dean Walling following his prostate cancer diagnosis🌲 Solihull Moors (A) Reviewed: 2-1 comeback win in awful conditions - game-changing triple sub, Feeney's first goal of the campaign, Ajiboye's winner & cracking shifts from Richardson and Duru🟡 Harrogate Town (H) Preview: Facing our bogey side under the BP lights, the Weaver family ownership change and assessing whether Town are play-off contenders🔄 Ex-Blues Round-Up: Catching up with former Carlisle players across the divisionsHost: Lee Rooney (@leerooney)Co-Host: Dan MacLennan (@dancufc) ------------------------📲 Connect with us: X (Twitter): @bruntonbugleFacebook: Search "Brunton Bugle"Instagram: @bruntonbugleEmail: bruntonbugle@gmail.com ------------------------ 🤝 Proudly Sponsored by CUSTWe’re delighted to be sponsored once again by the Carlisle United Supporters Trust (CUST) for the 2026/27 season.CUST (originally formed in 2001 as CCUIST and later known as CUOSC) is a democratic, community benefit society holding 10% voting control in CUFC Holdings Ltd and affiliated with the Football Supporters' Association (FSA).🚍 Away Travel Discount: CUST runs away buses to many fixtures throughout the season - with members getting a 10% discount!🌐 Find out more or join today: www.cust.org.uk | X: @CUFCTrust ------------------------ ☕ Support the PodWe love bringing you content for the Blues fanbase across the globe and will always do it for free, but if you’d like to help us cover hosting, studio, and equipment costs for the 2026/27 season, you can make a contribution on our Ko-Fi page:👉 ko-fi.com/bruntonbugle Every contribution makes a huge difference and is massively appreciated!

    01:20:14||Season 7, Ep. 21
    FA Cup progression secured and our name in the hat for the First Round proper! A 2-1 victory over Tamworth in the Fourth Qualifying Round got the job done on Saturday, even if the final scoreline made the afternoon look far tighter than it actually was. With cup business handled, the Blues now turn their attention straight back to league duties and a trip down the M6 to take on struggling Solihull Moors.Lee, Mike, and Nick kick off with the week's big news as the FA Cup First Round draw handed United a tough home tie, with League Two leaders Salford City heading to Brunton Park on the weekend of November 7th.We then get stuck into the Tamworth debrief - breaking down a dominant display where Regan Linney bagged a clinical brace and United had no fewer than four efforts cleared off the line. We also look at impressive full debuts from Tom Anderson and Kenton Richardson, plus a special family milestone as young Will Rafferty came off the bench to make his senior debut half a century after his grandad, Billy Rafferty, was pulling on the blue shirt.Finally, we preview Saturday's trip to Damson Park. The Moors are enduring a torrid campaign at the wrong end of the table, shipping goals at a staggering rate of nearly three per game. Can the Blues exploit their defensive fragilities and keep the momentum going? Plus, we discuss the uphill battle Solihull Moors face trying to build and sustain a fanbase when sandwiched directly between giants like Aston Villa and Birmingham City.Lots discussed in this episode, including:🏆 News Desk: FA Cup First Round draw - hosting League Two leaders Salford City at Brunton Park🐑 Tamworth (A) Reviewed: 2-1 cup triumph, Linney's double, four off the line, strong debuts for Anderson & Richardson, and Will Rafferty continuing the family legacy 50 years on🌲 Solihull Moors (A) Preview: Trip to Damson Park, targeting the division's leakiest backline & the battle for supporters in the shadow of Villa and Blues🔄 Ex-Blues Round-Up: Catching up with former Carlisle players across the divisionsHost: Lee Rooney (@leerooney)Co-Hosts: Mike Booth (@cufcmike) & Nick Brown (@Nick_Brown86)------------------------📲 Connect with us: X (Twitter): @bruntonbugleFacebook: Search "Brunton Bugle"Instagram: @bruntonbugleEmail: bruntonbugle@gmail.com ------------------------ 🤝 Proudly Sponsored by CUSTWe’re delighted to be sponsored once again by the Carlisle United Supporters Trust (CUST) for the 2026/27 season.CUST (originally formed in 2001 as CCUIST and later known as CUOSC) is a democratic, community benefit society holding 10% voting control in CUFC Holdings Ltd and affiliated with the Football Supporters' Association (FSA).🚍 Away Travel Discount: CUST runs away buses to many fixtures throughout the season - with members getting a 10% discount!🌐 Find out more or join today: www.cust.org.uk | X: @CUFCTrust ------------------------ ☕ Support the PodWe love bringing you content for the Blues fanbase across the globe and will always do it for free, but if you’d like to help us cover hosting, studio, and equipment costs for the 2026/27 season, you can make a contribution on our Ko-Fi page:👉 ko-fi.com/bruntonbugle Every contribution makes a huge difference and is massively appreciated!
  • 20. Three games unbeaten, but bore-draw leaves United stuck in the bottom-half [Kidderminster Harriers (H) Review and Tamworth (H) FA Cup Preview] - Season 26/27, Episode 20

    01:14:02||Season 7, Ep. 20
    Just as it felt like the Blues were finally building a head of steam, Saturday served up an almighty damp squib at Brunton Park. A flat, frustrating 0-0 stalemate against Kidderminster Harriers brought our winning run to a grinding halt in a game that won't live long in the memory.With no off-field news to distract us this week, Lee and Adam get straight into dissecting a lethargic display. We break down how United fell into Harriers' game-slowing trap, moved the ball far too slowly, and struggled to find the spark needed to unlock a stubborn defence. Yet despite the sluggish afternoon, the Blues still had the chances to nick all three points - rattling the woodwork and seeing Regan Linney’s penalty saved - leaving supporters frustrated by an afternoon of missed opportunities.From there, we switch focus to the world’s oldest cup competition as United prepare for an FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie against Tamworth at Brunton Park. We look at how the Lambs have fared so far this campaign, examine their recent non-league cup pedigree, and get stuck into the big debate: with a demanding league season to navigate, should an FA Cup run actually be any sort of priority for the club right now?Lots discussed in this episode, including:🦅 Kidderminster Harriers (H) Reviewed: 0-0 frustration - lethargic tempo, falling for game management tactics and Linney's penalty heartbreak🐑 Tamworth (A) FA Cup Preview: Assessing the Lambs, non-league cup pedigree & debating whether a cup run is a priority or a distraction🔄 Ex-Blues Round-Up: Catching up with former Carlisle players across the divisionsHost: Lee Rooney (@leerooney)Co-Host: Adam Tiffen (@AdamTiffen18)------------------------📲 Connect with us:X (Twitter): @bruntonbugleFacebook: Search "Brunton Bugle"Instagram: @bruntonbugleEmail: bruntonbugle@gmail.com ------------------------ 🤝 Proudly Sponsored by CUSTWe’re delighted to be sponsored once again by the Carlisle United Supporters Trust (CUST) for the 2026/27 season.CUST (originally formed in 2001 as CCUIST and later known as CUOSC) is a democratic, community benefit society holding 10% voting control in CUFC Holdings Ltd and affiliated with the Football Supporters' Association (FSA).🚍 Away Travel Discount: CUST runs away buses to many fixtures throughout the season - with members getting a 10% discount!🌐 Find out more or join today: www.cust.org.uk | X: @CUFCTrust ------------------------ ☕ Support the PodWe love bringing you content for the Blues fanbase across the globe and will always do it for free, but if you’d like to help us cover hosting, studio, and equipment costs for the 2026/27 season, you can make a contribution on our Ko-Fi page:👉 ko-fi.com/bruntonbugle Every contribution makes a huge difference and is massively appreciated!
  • 19. Shots brushed aside as Blues finally win two in a row [Aldershot Town (A) Review & Kidderminster Harriers (H) Preview] - Season 26/27, Episode 19

    01:10:06||Season 7, Ep. 19
    Two wins on the spin, six points in four days, and the Blues are finally building some genuine momentum! A clinical 3-1 victory on the road at Aldershot Town saw United back up the midweek win at Fylde in style, pushing us within touching distance of the top half of the table. A superb brace from David Ajiboye led the way, before Micah Obiero capped off a breathless 48-hour journey back from international duty with Kenya by coming off the bench to seal the points.Before diving into the match analysis, we run through the week's off-field news - including Hayden Atkinson extending his loan spell at Darlington, and an FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round draw that hands United a home tie against Tamworth.We then get stuck into the Aldershot debrief: can the squad now turn back-to-back wins into a proper unbeaten run? How much havoc did the fresh partnership of Ajiboye and Regan Linney cause in Georgie Kelly’s absence? And are supporters finally starting to see the very best of Teddy Jenks in midfield?From there, attention turns to Saturday's early 12:30 kick-off as Brunton Park plays host to Kidderminster Harriers for the first time in over 20 years. We examine how Harriers have adapted to Step 1 following promotion and losing their manager, highlight key threats like the experienced David Davis, and look at how United can keep their performance levels high.To wrap things up, we run through the usual ex-Blues round-up, before paying a (not particularly) touching tribute to Brunton Park's favourite pantomime villain, Harry McKirdy, following the announcement of his retirement.Lots discussed in this episode, including:📰 News Desk: Hayden Atkinson extends his Darlington loan & heading to Tamworth in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round🔴 Aldershot Town (A) Reviewed: Back-to-back wins, Ajiboye at the double, Obiero’s mad dash from Kenya, the Linney partnership & Teddy Jenks finding his groove🦅 Kidderminster Harriers (H) Preview: First clash in two decades, early 12:30 kick-off, Harriers post-promotion, David Davis & maintaining the winning habit🎭 Ex-Blues & McKirdy’s Curtain Call: Former players round-up and bidding farewell to our favourite pantomime villain after hanging up his bootsHost: Lee Rooney (@leerooney)Co-Host: Mike Booth (@cufcmike)------------------------📲 Connect with us:X (Twitter): @bruntonbugleFacebook: Search "Brunton Bugle"Instagram: @bruntonbugleEmail: bruntonbugle@gmail.com ------------------------ 🤝 Proudly Sponsored by CUSTWe’re delighted to be sponsored once again by the Carlisle United Supporters Trust (CUST) for the 2026/27 season.CUST (originally formed in 2001 as CCUIST and later known as CUOSC) is a democratic, community benefit society holding 10% voting control in CUFC Holdings Ltd and affiliated with the Football Supporters' Association (FSA).🚍 Away Travel Discount: CUST runs away buses to many fixtures throughout the season - with members getting a 10% discount!🌐 Find out more or join today: www.cust.org.uk | X: @CUFCTrust ------------------------ ☕ Support the PodWe love bringing you content for the Blues fanbase across the globe and will always do it for free, but if you’d like to help us cover hosting, studio, and equipment costs for the 2026/27 season, you can make a contribution on our Ko-Fi page:👉 ko-fi.com/bruntonbugle Every contribution makes a huge difference and is massively appreciated!

    From Saturday’s crisis to Tuesday night relief in Lancashire! After the dark clouds of the Woking defeat, the Blues delivered the perfect response at Mill Farm, battling to a gritty 2-0 win over AFC Fylde to claim our first away victory and first clean sheet of the campaign, and taking some much-needed heat off Rob Elliot.Before getting stuck into the match debrief, we kick off with transfer news as defender Tom Anderson seals a return to Brunton Park for a second loan spell - more than a decade after his first temporary stay in Cumbria!We then break down an evening on the Fylde coast where substance firmly won out over style. We look at a disciplined defensive shift that heavily restricted the hosts, two clinical goals forged through relentless pressing and sharp counter-attacking, stand-out performances from Jack Ellis and Morgan Feeney, Regan Linney’s timely return to form, and another superb away backing on a Tuesday night.Finally, we turn our attention south to preview Saturday’s clash against surprise package Aldershot Town. Two home games at Brunton Park, two points on the board, and plenty of head-scratching! A chaotic 2-2 draw with Southend saw United create enough chances to win by six or seven before needing a dramatic, late Georgie Kelly rescue act.
