Behind Enemy Lines: Hornchurch (H) - Season 26/27, Episode 9

Season 7, Ep. 9

🎙️ Behind Enemy Lines: Ep 3 – Hornchurch (H)

Welcome to the latest edition of Behind Enemy Lines! Our opposition preview chats drop on matchday mornings before every weekend and midweek fixture to get you prepped for kick-off.

Ahead of our first-ever meeting with Hornchurch at Brunton Park, Lee is joined by Urchins fan and media journalist Bailey Howard to get the inside track on one of non-league’s great recent success stories.

From lifting the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2021 as an Isthmian League club to surging through the divisions into the National League, Hornchurch have taken Step 1 in their stride, arriving in Cumbria with a perfect six points from six under manager Daryl McMahon.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • 🏆 The Fairytale Rise: From 2021 FA Trophy glory to back-to-back promotions, the impact of Daryl McMahon, and ex-Premier League defender Anton Ferdinand joining the coaching staff.
  • 🚀 A Dream Start at Step 1: Six points from six against Kidderminster and Barrow, high squad togetherness, and defying the pre-season relegation predictions.
  • 👑 The 'Colombian King' & Ex-Blues Link: Former Carlisle attacker Angelo Balanta’s talismanic status down at Bridge Avenue and his influence in the Urchins' attack.
  • 🧱 Squad Blueprint: Blending seasoned defensive experience (Ryan Inniss, Joe Kizzi, Sam Ling) with hungry young attacking talent.
  • 🏟️ Bridge Avenue to Brunton Park: Ground redevelopment plans, the tight atmosphere at Bridge Avenue, 5:00 AM alarm clocks for a 12:30 PM kick-off, and visiting the Brunton Park Fan Zone.
  • 🔮 Match Prediction: Bailey puts his neck on the line with his score prediction for Saturday.

Thanks again to Bailey for joining us and keep an eye out for future Behind Enemy Lines episodes across the campaign!

  • 8. Bunker Buster Saves Blues Blushes [Yeovil Town (A) Review, Hornchurch (H) Preview] - Season 26/27, Episode 8

    01:09:40||Season 7, Ep. 8
    A 660-mile round trip down to Somerset, a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, and our first point of the season on the board! It might have been tense and frustrating afternoon at Huish Park, but the Blues showed plenty of character at Huish Park to salvage a 1-1 draw late on against Yeovil. Now, attention turns straight back to Brunton Park as we welcome high-flying Hornchurch for our first-ever meeting with the Urchins.In this episode, we run through the latest transfer activity around the squad before getting stuck into the Yeovil debrief - breaking down Harvey Bunker’s flying start to life in blue, how Adam Desbois fared on his debut in goal, whether the Cameron Harper midfield experiment is paying off and if Jonah Lowes is ready to be thrown into the starting XI. We then look ahead to Saturday’s clash against an in-form Hornchurch side, discuss what it’ll take to make Brunton Park a fortress again, and somehow end up falling down a rabbit hole about the Anglian Ice Age (no, seriously). Lots discussed in this episode, including:📰 News Desk: Squad movements as Luke Skinner arrives on loan, plus loan departures for Seb Mason and Amaru Smith🧤Yeovil Town (A) Reviewed: Harvey Bunker’s late heroics, midfield balance dilemmas, Desbois’ debut & Jonah Lowes pushing for starts🔴 Hornchurch (H) Preview: First-ever clash with the Urchins, home form, score predictions & an unexpected geology lesson.🔵 Ex-Blues Round-Up: Catching up with former Carlisle players across the leagues.Host: Lee Rooney (@leerooney) Co-Hosts: Adam Tiffen (@AdamTiffen18) & Nick Brown (@Nick_Brown86) 🚨 Bonus Pod Alert:Looking for Behind Enemy Lines? 01:14:02||Season 7, Ep. 6
    The opening day certainly provided a bit of a wake-up call for the title favourites!After a good first-half performance that had the Brunton Park faithful feeling cautiously optimistic, a second-half collapse saw the Blues fall to a 3-2 defeat against National League new boys Worthing. But there’s no time to dwell as we reflect on the weekend, digest more transfer business, and look ahead to a long trip down to Yeovil Town.In this episode, we run through a busy week of news - including Gabe Breeze’s move to Cambridge United and the arrival of his replacement, Adam Desbois (yep, another signing from Gateshead!). We then get stuck into the Worthing debrief: did the team simply run out of steam in the second half? Are we fitting square pegs in round holes? And what positives can we take from that encouraging first 45 minutes?Finally, we turn our attention to Huish Park as we preview Saturday’s clash with Yeovil, where a familiar face in Archie Davies will be lining up against us for the first time since leaving Brunton Park in the summer.Lots discussed in this episode, including:📰 News Update: Gabe Breeze departs for Cambridge, while Adam Desbois arrives from Gateshead⚽️ Worthing (H) Reviewed: 3-2 defeat debrief - first-half positives, second-half fatigue & selection dilemmas.🧤 Yeovil Town (A) Preview: Match preview, predictions & facing Archie Davies for the first time.🔵 Ex-Blues: Catching up with former United players across the leaguesHost: Lee Rooney (@leerooney)Co-Host: Adam Tiffen (@AdamTiffen18)Co-Host: Nick Brown (@Nick_Brown86)🚨 Bonus Pod Alert: Looking for Behind Enemy Lines? • 3. Bitesize Bugle - Miguel Azeez Interview - Season 26/27, Episode 3

    16:35||Season 7, Ep. 3
    With the new season almost upon us, we're making sure you've got plenty of content to keep you entertained ahead of the big kick-off this weekend. The second of FOUR episodes out this week is our first "Bitesize Bugle" (or should it be "Pintsized"?) episode - a little appetiser ahead of the longer-form versions of the show. For this mini-episode, we're chatting to none-other than United's new number 6, summer signing Miguel Azeez! The former Arsenal man may only be 23, but he's already had an interesting and varied career - from training with the likes of David Luiz, Bakayo Saka and Granit Xhaka to spells in Spain and Greece, before catching United's attention at Morecambe last season. Plenty to cover and certainly comes across as someone who'll be a strong and positive character in the Blues' dressing room this season.Thanks to Miguel for giving up his time and for the media team at the club for helping to arrange this chat - hopefully we'll get a few more for you across the season!Keep an eye out for the Worthing preview later this week, along with the new standalone "Behind Enemy Lines" series starting on Saturday morning.Host: Lee Rooney (@leerooney)-------------------Find us on X (@bruntonbugle), Facebook (search for "Brunton Bugle") and Instagram (@bruntonbugle)You can email us with any questions, suggestions and feedback at bruntonbugle@gmail.com.-----------------We’re delighted to confirm that the Carlisle United Supporters Trust (CUST) will be sponsoring the Brunton Bugle once again this season.CUST, formed originally in 2001 as CCUIST and later known as CUOSC, is the supporters' trust for Carlisle United. Yes, it's that time again - Season Preview and Predictions! After going into our first season back in the fifth tier a little bit in the dark last summer, this time around we're hoping our knowledge has got at least a little bit better as we dive into the runners and riders in this season's National League campaign.In this episode of the Brunton Bugle, we chat about some of the main contenders for promotion this season, who will struggle near the bottom and who is destined for mid-table obscurity, alongside United's overall chances and our infamously bad predictions.Do we all think United can bounce back to the EFL at the seocnd attempt?
