#142: How to Find Mentors to Help You Level Up and Grow

Season 1, Ep. 142

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week!

On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit talks to us about how to find mentors to help you level up and grow.

Think of someone you want to learn from, someone you respect, but don’t know. How do you show up on their radar? How do you get a bit of their time, council, and mentorship so you can grow?

The thing about people who are up to big things is that they tend to have a lot on their plate. That includes having a lot of people, sometimes hundreds or thousands, all wanting something from them. Everywhere they go someone’s asking for their help, time, or resources.

You could be a great person, a mini-Gandhi in the making, but if you approach them the same way that everyone else does, your voice will get lost in the crowd—the crowd of people who all “want” something from them.

So what’s the alternative?

Dhru shares that every mentor he has ever wanted to meet and learn from has something they care about that isn’t getting much attention or could use some extra support. It could be a little passion project they started or a non-profit they really care about for example. Whatever it is, it’s something that could use a little help, but chances are, most people don’t know about it—it’s under the radar.

Find that thing that they care about and authentically support it. Not as a means to an end, but because it deserves it. Support it because you respect them and believe in the project. Support it because the project could use your help and your unique skill set.

Everyone wants, few are willing to give. But as Dhru’s friend Sean Stephenson says, “The more you give, the more you live.”

#171: All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris Kresser

Season 1, Ep. 171
All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris KresserAs humans, we often fall into black and white thinking. It can be easy to let the constant waterfall of media information and social snippets wash over us without stopping to think of the full context. In this age of COVID-19, though, it’s more important than ever to pause and look at what the science really has to say. When we slip into confirmation bias and seek out answers that solidify what we already believe, we lose the ability to think critically. Now, more than ever, is the time to change that so we can overcome this pandemic. That’s exactly what Dhru and Chris Kresser talk about on this episode of The Broken Brain Podcast.Chris Kresser is a renowned expert, leading clinician, and top educator in the fields of Functional Medicine and ancestral health, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure. Listed among the 100 most influential people in health and fitness by Greatist.com, he was awarded “Best Inspirational Voice” and “Best Health & Wellness Website” by Paleo magazine in 2019. Chris founded the Kresser Institute in 2015 to provide the next generation of Functional Health practitioners and coaches with the skills and tools they need to turn the tide of chronic disease—and change the future of medicine. Through the Kresser Institute, Chris created and launched the ADAPT Practitioner and Health Coach Training Programs, and he and his team have trained over 2,000 health professionals around the world in his unique approach. In spring of 2020, largely in response to COVID-19, Chris decided to move on from his position of co-founder and co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine to develop Adapt180 Health: a revolutionary new membership-based Functional Medicine practice and health transformation service. In this episode, Dhru and Chris jump into an open conversation about the most pressing COVID topics and what the latest research is showing. Starting with vitamin D, they look at some dramatic results of several studies, with the takeaway being that a majority of COVID patients have been found to have vitamin D deficiency, and those who are vitamin D deficient have higher inflammatory markers and a higher risk of death. They discuss the science behind mask wearing and why it’s a helpful piece of stopping the spread of coronavirus, but only one piece. They also talk about the latest findings of the vaccine trials and what we know, and don’t know.In this episode, we dive into:-Vitamin D levels among asymptomatic and critically ill COVID-19 patients and the correlation with inflammatory markers (12:56)-Randomized control trial of vitamin D (17:26)-Vitamin D testing and supplement recommendations (32:40)-Why masks are getting so much attention when the data is nuanced (35:28)-The research on COVID-19 and masks (46:06)-COVID-19 vaccine—what we know and what we don’t know (1:08:14)-Concerns around the safety of a vaccine when it’s developed so quickly (1:15:37)-Oxford AstraZeneca phase III vaccine trial and how it differs from Pfizer and Moderna vaccine trials (1:30:42)-Rapid at home COVID testing (1:41:01)-What you can do today to take control of your health (1:49:03)For more on Chris Kresser, be sure to follow him on Instagram @chriskresser, on Facebook @chriskresserlac, on Twitter @chriskresser, on YouTube @chriskresser, and through his website https://chriskresser.com. The Most Common Underlying Causes of Acne (Minisode #16)

Our skin is a reflection of what’s going on with our health beneath the surface. Acne and other skin problems are signals that something is off in our body. Conventional medicine deals with symptoms, so their solutions for acne include lathering on potions and lotions, popping and pricking pimples, and taking antibiotics or strong liver-damaging medications. There’s got to be another way, right?Fortunately, there is with Functional Medicine, which addresses the problem’s root cause. From this lens, we can understand that numerous factors contribute to acne, including nutrition, stress, toxicity, inflammation and hormonal and gut imbalances. That’s actually good news because it empowers us to make dietary and lifestyle changes that reverse acne and improve our overall health without the adverse side effects of pharmaceuticals and other invasive procedures. In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Dr. Robin Berzin about the most common underlying causes of acne, and the connection between gut health and skin issues. We discuss why conventional acne treatments don’t actually work, and often end up doing more harm. We also talk about how the cosmetics we use on our skin can increase inflammation which inturn leads to acne, and the best skincare routine and products for someone suffering with acne.Dr. Robin Berzin is the founder and CEO of Parsley Health. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Robin completed medical school at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and trained in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She has also trained in Functional Medicine with the Institute for Functional Medicine, where she is an advisor on digital technology. In 2011 she co-founded the physician communication app Cureatr and subsequently has advised numerous startups in the healthcare space. Robin founded Parsley Health in order to make whole-body, transformative medicine accessible to everyone through better services and smart technology. When she is not at Parsley, you can find her at home in Brooklyn, upstate with her husband, son and two rescue dogs, or at her favorite vinyasa yoga class.Find Dhru’s full-length conversation with Dr. Robin Berzin here: https://broken-brain.lnk.to/DrRobinBerzin/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.
