#156: Hacking Your Brain and Emotions with this 90 Second Formula with Dr. Joan Rosenberg

Season 1, Ep. 156

What often blocks most people from success and feeling capable in life is the ability to experience, move through, and handle unpleasant feelings, such as sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration, and vulnerability.

Knowing how to deal with intense, overwhelming, or uncomfortable feelings is essential to building confidence, emotional strength, and resilience. Yet when we distract or disconnect from these feelings, we move away from confidence, health, and our desired pursuits, ultimately undermining our ability to fully realize our ambitions.

On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru, talks to Dr. Joan Rosenberg, a psychologist who is known as an innovative thinker, acclaimed speaker, and trainer. She is a professor of graduate psychology at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, CA, and is a two-time TEDx speaker and member of the Association of Transformational Leaders. Dr. Rosenberg has been featured in the documentary I Am, The Miracle Mindset, Pursuing Happiness, and The Hidden Epidemic. She’s been seen on CNN’s American Morning, the OWN network, and PBS, as well as appearances and radio interviews in all of the major metropolitan markets. Her latest book, 90 Seconds to a Life You Love: How to Master Your Difficult Feelings to Cultivate Lasting Confidence, Resilience and Authenticity, was released this past February.

In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Rosenberg talk about how to work through unpleasant feelings, and how to build emotional strength to create the life of your dreams. They discuss why worrying about what other people think of you is really just a distraction from feeling vulnerable, and why harsh self-criticism is one of the most destructive things we can do to ourselves. They also talk about why speaking your truth is the most important action to take to cultivate confidence, authenticity, and resilience.

In this episode, we dive into:

-How our emotions are tied to our success (1:59)

-Why it’s so difficult for us to experience unpleasant feelings (11:59)

-Why labeling our feelings is so important (16:54)

-How to build confidence (25:25)

-How to stay present to your feelings through The Rosenberg Reset Formula (31:28)

This episode is brought to you by the Pegan Shake.

How you start your morning sets the tone for the day. I’m a huge fan of morning routines, because I think they can transform your ability to focus, sleep well, and get the most out of your day, especially in this busy, modern world.

What I’ve found is that the best way to begin your day is to feed your body the right information or the right nutrients. That’s why Dr. Mark Hyman and I created the Pegan Shake. It’s a nutritionally-packed morning blend designed to support healthy blood sugar, energy, and brain power.

It contains some of my most favorite brain boosting foods like MCT and avocado. It also features acacia fiber for healthy gut function and collagen, pumpkin, and pea protein to support muscle synthesis. Check it out at getfarmacy.com/peganshake.

The Functional Medicine Approach to Heart Disease

We often think of aging as synonymous with decline. We believe that having memory loss, becoming slow and less agile, experiencing joint pain and stiffness, increasing diseases, and need for medications are all viewed as ‘normal’ as we age. The truth is, becoming overweight, sick, and slow are NOT inevitable. We need to reframe how we view aging. The current theory that aging is just a slow and painful decline until we die is outdated and archaic. Currently, our healthspans do not equal our lifespans. Your healthspan is how well you live, your lifespan is how long you live. So while it’s true that human bodies cannot live forever, there are proven scientific methods to extend our healthspan, and that’s really what matters. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, we are sharing episode 2 from our 8-part docu-series, the Longevity Roadmap, hosted by Dr. Mark Hyman. In the Longevity Roadmap, you’ll learn all about the prevalent diseases of aging that decrease healthspan, how the conventional approach to these conditions is backwards, how to identify and treat the root cause of aging using the Functional Medicine approach, and more importantly, how to improve your healthspan to live a long, vibrant life.In Episode 2, we’ll discuss the biggest killer of our time: cardiovascular disease. There is so much misinformation out there about what causes cardiovascular disease. We’ll talk about innovative testing and recommendations around prevention. We’ll also cover:-The misconceptions around heart disease.-How to identify the root cause of heart disease.-The best ways to protect and support your heart. This 8-part docu-series, explores the Functional Medicine approach to heart disease, cancer, balancing hormones, and brain health, how to eat for longevity, and innovative therapies that have been shown to increase healthspan. Join Dr. Hyman and other experts and doctors at The UltraWellness Center to learn how to create optimal health and Become Young at Any Age.You can watch the Longevity Roadmap docu-series for free, between January 13th and 20th—click here to sign-up: https://longevityfilm.com/.
