The story begins in London, in March 1918, in the elegant district of Belgravia. One ton of explosives had destroyed a wing of the Royal Hospital of Chelsea on the banks of the Thames. A terrified young woman who had been walking home rushed to ring the doorbell of the first house she recognized. The lady of the house, the young woman’s friend, happened to be holding a dinner in honor of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, the eldest son of George V and Queen Mary.
