The first of its kind, On Record is a multi-artist, multi-genre concept album forming a sonic love letter to the city of Birmingham. Produced as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival, the eleven-track album will be available on a limited vinyl release and across all streaming platforms.  


From her early days as a Birmingham punk to the recent internet phenomenon of Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch, Toyah Willcox has become an award-winning rock legend as well as a much-loved actress, and music composer. In this episode Satnam Rana digs deep into Toyah’s enduring career, what influences and drives her. And what a career!


Toyah has amassed thirteen top 40 singles, recorded twenty-five albums, written two books, appeared in over forty stage plays, acted in over twenty feature films, including Derek Jarman’s seminal punk epic, Jubilee, and presented hundreds of TV programmes in her own charismatic, outspoken, and impossible to categorise way. She released Posh Pop, her first solo studio album since 2008, in August 2021.

Magika might be the self-confessed Mr Marmite of rave, but as he says: “Love me or hate me, I rocked raves.” In this episode Adrian Goldberg talks to Magika about how the young boy from Stirchley, hooked on beats, came to MC for Carl Cox and some of the biggest names in dance music.Getting his first big break from UB40, Aimran Majid worked tirelessly on his personal style and promoting himself. Friends helped him come up with his MC name, Magika, and he soon became well known for his crowd hyping skills. He performed with the DJ Carl Cox for 5 years during the early 1990s, a collaboration that saw Magika travel the world playing alongside the likes of The Prodigy.

In this episode Satnam Rana talks to singer, model, and dancer Bambi Bains about learning bhangra dancing, winning talent shows, and mastering multiple musical instruments while still at school in Birmingham. Satnam and Bambi discuss growing up in Birmingham with a strong stance on female empowerment believing cultural boundaries can be broken through through music.Discovered at 16 while dancing in a video, Bambi released her debut single Chakkar in 2017, and tasted global success with follow up tracks Retro Rarri and Duniya. In 2021, she released the bilingual single Khavaal, which combines her Punjabi heritage with a strong R&B vibe. In January this year, she signed to Sony Music Publishing and embarked on her first UK tour in February.

In this episode Adrian Goldberg talks to prominent music industry figure John Mostyn who has had an enviable and varied career in music. Adrian and Johndiscuss managing The Beat and Fine Young Cannibals, helping to launch Two Tone and Ocean Colour Scene and rescuing a Birmingham music venue, and running a recording studio.Originally from Cheshire, John moved to Birmingham in 1972 to sell furniture, and has spent most of his professional life here. He has had considerable influence in the area's music industry, reportedly bringing over £30 million into the local economy. With Mostyn as manager the Fine Young Cannibals enjoyed huge success, including a Billboard number 1 album with The Raw & the Cooked, which has been certified Platinum 11 times around the world.
