01:02:41||Season 1, Ep. 2Alexandra Ayers (she/her) is an author, podcaster, and influencer who became viral on TikTok for her blunt and refreshing perspectives on topics like sex work, paid maternity leave, femicide, and more. You can check out her "I'm Just Being Honest" podcast on Apple, where she tackles anything from romance to feminism with guests from all walks of life. She joins me on the latest BlackRadicals! episode to discuss the overturning of Roe V Wade and what that means for reproductive justice, bodily autonomy, and the right to privacy in the United States.Alex's podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/im-just-being-honest/id1559829521Notes:The articles Alex referred to:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-legal-limbo-of-abortion-rights/id1042433083?i=1000569722826https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/07/04/we-are-not-going-back-to-the-time-before-roe-we-are-going-somewhere-worsehttps://www.vox.com/23207949/supreme-court-abortion-methotrexate-prescription-pharmacist-refuseSources for reproductive rights statistics:https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/06/24/what-the-data-says-about-abortion-in-the-u-s-2/https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/women-reflect-on-what-life-was-like-before-roe-v-wadehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/made-by-history/2022/07/14/what-pre-civil-war-history-tells-us-about-coming-abortion-battle/https://theintercept.com/2020/09/14/ice-detention-center-nurse-whistleblower/https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/maternal-mortality/2020/maternal-mortality-rates-2020.htmhttps://www.nativewomenswilderness.org/mmiwhttps://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/01/13/how-trump-compares-with-other-recent-presidents-in-appointing-federal-judges/A great addition on the topic of maternity care in the U.S. by Alex:One thing I forgot to mention was that a lot of women are in maternity care deserts. Even in the Bay Area, there’s only three hospitals for millions of people. Since there will be no access to abortion, this means that because of the sheer increase in the number of pregnancies, a lot of women and pregnant people are going to be forced to manage their pregnancies and births at home. This is especially concerning because not only of America’s high maternal mortality rate but because of the concept of fetal personhood, if anything goes wrong there is going to be heavy investigations into everyone involved with the pregnancy and delivery. This includes: the pregnant person (most likely a Woman of Color who is already a mother), midwives, doulas, private nurses, family members, etc. This could lead to the prosecution of countless people which is why voting locally is so essential because elected officials can not only change the laws but at the very least not enforce them. https://www.marchofdimes.org/research/maternity-care-deserts-report.aspxResources to help: https://blackrj.org/
