This week's podcast. Meant to upload Friday morning. In all my excitement about unearthing all the old Furtive 50s (probably of greater historical significance than the fact Stonehenge is actually Welsh, I reckon), I totally forgot. • The Furtive 50, 2014

    01:02:27|
THE FURTIVE 50, 2014Thank you to Sam who, unlike me, kept a record of all the Furtive 50s. I'd forgotten we used to write little reviews under each track, too. Amazing. No wonder we went out of business. It might be late but it was worth the wait, this is it, the fifty biggest tracks of 2014, chosen by you, the DJhistory massive and a selection of our favourite DJs, producers and salsa dancing instructors. You’ll find a smörgasbord of succulent soundscapes below from all-out disco to Balearic boat party bangers, tribal house music from Switzerland and the odd dash of propa (sic) house music. We’ve also got our number one album for your perusal. Let’s get to it.01. HOUSE OF SPIRITS - Holding On (Beats In Space)Welcome to the church of Tom Noble, all rise! If we voted for a label of the year, Beats In Space might just be the winner (though Golf Channel may have something to say). Compared to the show, BIS the label is only in in its infancy but in ‘Holding On’ it delivered something timeless. It may sound like an old Salsoul record but the soaring strings and live percussion are actually the results of a live studio jam where Noble invited musicians to reproduce his sonic sketches originally created by lifting beats from old records. The result is a glorious, church-drenched ode to disco, lurching wildly and wonderfully at times; just don’t let go.02. TALAMANCA SYSTEM – Balanzat (International Feel)Mark Barrott, apart from living the life we are all jealous of, moved IFEEL from Uruguay to Ibiza, unmasked himself as the creative force behind almost all of tracks released on his label, released Sketches From An Island an album that was just pipped to our number one spot (it certainly wins best artwork) and teamed up with Gerd Janson to release a true Balearic gem named after one of the White Isleís most famous beaches. if you’ve spent anytime near a body of water, with a set of decks and discerning DJ then you would have heard this.03. AFRICAINE 808 – Lagos, New York (Golf Channel)Apart from failing Geography, Berliners Dirk Leyers and Nomad spent the rest of their time obsessing over the Roland TR-808, programmed it to lay polyrhythms over old African percussion tracks, gradually replaced samples with live guitar, bass and organ parts and ended up sounding like a long lost African electro-disco artist from the í80s. This, by the way, is a bloody good thing to sound like.04. MIND FAIR - C.E.R.E.M.O.N.Y (Velvet Season and The Hearts Of Gold remix) (Golf Channel)Gerry Rooney and Joel Martin take Mind Fair’s lovely, splendidly plodding ‘C.E.R.E.M.O.N.Y.' and cover it with swathes of loveliness, beef it up a bit and turn it into something of an endless dancefloor wonder.05. ROISIN MURPHY – Ancora, Ancora, Ancora (Severino and Nico De Ceglia remix) (The Vinyl Factory)She’s hot, slightly eccentric and has had a fiddle with the top ten. And now she’s been remixed into a big ol' disco diva by Nico De Ceglia and Severino from HMD. Encore, encore, encore!06. TORNADO WALLACE – Circadia (ESP Institute)Lewie Day gatecrashes our top ten with a magnificent beard and epic, percussion heavy banger that has a whiff of a slowed down Age Of Loveí about it. That is a very good thing.07. IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE – The Talking Fish (Soundway)Mix equal measures of traditional Nigerian funk with British electronica. Add bit of afrobeat, gospel and a seriously heavy bassline and you get one hell of a fish stew.08. MARK E – Magazine (MERC)We can’t see Mark wearing one of the Girlie Tourí conical bras but then we never imagined he would release a brilliantly brooding, dark, thrappy version of ‘Vogue’, so you never know.09. PERCUSSIONS – KHLHI (TEXT)Kieren Hebden, the Guardian readers dance music pinup drops some soul samples before once again just messing with your head as well as your hips.10. SESSION VICTIM – Never Forget (Delusions Of Grandeur)Berlin’s vinyl-worshipping, underground house superheroes Session Victim unleashed this massive piano-houser that’s impossible to get out of your head.11. AUSTIN CAESAR – 1 Year (Proibito)Two mentions of Caesar in one year. This is the first and we could listen to this every day for the three hundred and sixty five without getting tired of it. It’s that good.12. NAUTIC – Freedom On The Floor (Open Space remix) (Test Pressing)This can still be heard echoing around the bays and from the cliffs of the Adriatic. A record that was quite simply designed for a beach bar. Listen while wearing armbands, snorkel and flippers.13. JACK J – Looking Forward To You (Mood Hut)Never looking over his shoulder and probably bumping into people like the geezer from The Verve walking down Hoxton market. Jack J is definitely forward thinking as well as looking.14. MARK SEVEN – My Caesar (People Must Jam)Caesar mention number two and this one is Mark Seven's alone. It’s a deep house beauty, once again showcasing the diversity and production skills of dance music’s favourite pirate.15. MONTEZUMA’S RACHE – Wu Du Wu (Second Circle)The track that none of us had heard of before you voted for it and one we now all love. From us, to you, Thank youî. Keep on doing what you’re Wu Du Wu(ing).16. THE BLACK MADONNA – Stay (The Night Owl Diner)The second reference to Madge in this year’s chart and another track to make you get into the groove, like a virgin, causing a commotion. It’s true (blue) (You’re sacked - Ed.)17. HIDDEN FEES – So What (Beats In Space)Don't like post punk-sounding records on your dancefloor that have a hint of The Zebras about them? Well, so what! Beats In Space on point again.18. JORDAN GCZ – Swingonoguitaro (Future Times)Jordan GCZ is the world champion in the ancient art of guitar swinging. When not dominating the sport world-wide he spends his down time making absolutely mint tunes like this.19. TELEPHONES – Blaff (Running Back)After a call where all he could hear was ‘blaff, blaff, blaff’ Gerd Jansen got a free upgrade, one hundred extra minutes and this. Proof that telephones are for more than just taking selfies.20. PAQUA - Late Train (Emperor Machine Remix) (Claremont 56)The original went off the rails and crashed into last year’s top ten. The Emperor Machine remix may not have made it quite so high but it’s definitely more bullet train than steam engine.21. L.H.A.S. INC – LA Sunrise (Rong)Felix Dickinson and Jamie Lloyd channelling Larry Heard but dropping their normally weighty acid excursions for something a little more spectacularly sun- drenched.22. ZSOU - Admiral Byrd (Island Of The Gods)This was described somewhere as an, ‘Alternative Indonesian voodoo groove’, which is not only accurate but also makes it sound scarily brilliant.23. SEVEN DAVIS JR. – P.A.R.T.Y. (Apron)Just in case you were unsure what exactly to do with a night out in way back in 1999, Seven Davis Jr., literally spells it out for you.24. FRITS WENTINK – (Borg)Frits Wentik sounds a little bit like some sort of mad scientist and ëSpasmodicí sounds a bit like an automaton creation that has gone seriously wrong.25. CARIBOU – Can’t Do Without You (Merge)Dan Snaith specialises in; epic slabs of pop perfection and this year, you all though that this was exactly that. A track we can't do without, just gorgeous.26. FLOATING POINTS - Nuits Sonores (Eglo)If Four Tet truly is the Guardian reader's dance music saviour then Sam Shepherd can’t be far behind. Another melody-laden mathematical musical masterpiece from the Manchester neuro-scientist.27. GREGORY PORTER - Musical Genocide (St Germain Remix) (Universal)Gregory Porter and St Germain join considerable forces to come up with this soulful, skipping slice of musical wonderment. The perfect summers day soundtrack.28. COOBER PEDY UNIVERSITY BAND – Kookaburra (Animals Dancing)Two years on the trot for these lads from down under and another underground jam. Perhaps inspired by Steve Irwin, this is also, without doubt, the most Australian song ever made.29. KHIDJA - Mustafa (Timothy J Fairplay remix) (Emotional] Especial)Ever had a rave in a Bedouin tent in the desert where it was so beautiful that you cried and a single dragonfly hovered in front of your eyes? You have? Fairplay then mate.30. ACAID ARAB FT AVRIL & SHADI KRIES - Samira (Versatile)While all the house-heads are shouting, ‘play some classics’, all the hipsters are nodding furiously to this. That is until it loses its shit near the end and everyone is dancing..31. UNIVERSAL CAVE – Around The Bend (Universal Cave)Just around the bend you can find a universal cave and within that cave sits a cowboy and his posse of musical wranglers and when they jam, they play this.32. SKATEBÅRD – Confirmation Bias (Telephones remix) (Untz Untz)Neither a wrong number nor a prank caller, recent Wild Life guest Telephones with another ace remix. This time rubbing Skatebård up the right way.33. STEVE MASON – Seen It All Before (Greg Wilson and Derek Kaye remix) (Double Six)Greg Wilson is back on remix duties alongside Derek Kaye. Oiling Steve Mason's lush pop nugget into a throbbing disco chugger and something of a Madchester (sic) throwback!34. JOSE MANUEL – Anja (Kinfolk)If you were totally on one, at a rave held in a Persian bazaar this might well be playing. Suspend the fact that Jose is Italian for a minute, give this a whirl and rock the casbah.35. ALMA NEGRA – Mao Negra (Basic Fingers)A secretive band of sonic archaeologists uncovered this shuffling percussive, slice of tribal chanting voodoo magic from the deepest, darkest, heart of far flung Switzerland.36. DJ NATURE & KUNIYUKI – Groove Chase (DJ Nature version) (Sound Of Speed)The man once known as Milo from the the Wild Bunch chases the groove on this low slung, freaky-deaky, jazzy little number. Is that a slap-bass we hear?37. GENERAL LUDD - Brothers and Sisters (Mister Saturday Night)General Ludd is the leader of the incestuous armies of the world, brothers and sisters fighting side by side except on Saturday nights when they get time off and go raving, together obviously.38. JEX OPOLIS – DZE (Good Timin')On some far flung beach there’s a man, wearing a white hat, drinking a Mai Thai, staring wistfully at the sunset and slapping his thigh slightly out of time to this.39. FELIX DICKINSON - Burning Flame (Future Boogie)Foolish Felix with his second entry in this year's chart and unlike the other one, this sees him along with a ‘come to bed’ vocal firmly back in the sexy acid territory.40. MIDNIGHT MAGIC – Night Flight (Soul Clap)While many things can happen at the Witching hour, this peach from the native New Yorkers can getting you flying at any time of the night, or day, depending how hard you are.41. PALMS TRAX – Houses In Motion (Tin Man remix) (Lobster Theremin)Palms Trax was commissioned by the British caravaning society to come up with a theme tune for their latest advert. This remix from Tin Man comes straight from the heart – or not....42. MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE – Raw Cuts (Recloose Mix) (MCDE)Considering he's supposed to be a recloose, Matthew Chicoine sure seems to get around a lot. Here he is adding a little sheen to MCDE’s 2008 Raw Cuts release.43. THE GINO FONTAINE – Revnorev (Revno)Andy Meecham gave himself a foreign name and unleashed a cracker. Rinsed by our very own Bill and included on his second After Dark compilation, it could be said this is something of a ringer.44. LORD OF THE ISLES – co2o (Permanent Vacation)Perennial Furtive 50 stalwart Lord Of The Isles forgets the referendum and asks you to spend twelve minutes of your day with your head lost in his wide-screen techno opus.45. EARNEST & JUST – Still Here (Misterio)A massive gospel banger that is probably more at home on Sunday but comes perhaps confusingly via the boys behind Mister Saturday night. Praise the lord.46. A VISION OF PANORAMA – Southern Breeze (Aficionado)A track never to be played in in Panorama bar and instead more at home lilting across a beach, riding a southern breeze. More top class Balearic brilliance from the gentleman at Aficionado.47. MINOR SCIENCE – The Beckoner (The Trilogy Tapes)It might be safe to say that science never beckoned any of us during our school days, if this can get a few kids fiddling with test tubes then it’s a job done.48. OMAR S – Romancing The Stone (FXHE)A friend of ours once danced with Danny Devito at Coachella (true) but one of us was once in a coke-laden club in Cartagena getting off with Joan Wilder (not true).49. EDDIE C – Farmer God (Red Motorbike)DJhistory favourite and former log cabin dweller Eddie C moved to Berlin a short while ago but seems to be getting back to his slow burning agricultural roots.50. IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE – Let's Dance (Soundway)Not content with a top ten smash, Ibibio Sound Machine sneak in through the tradesman’s to remind us what the whole point of this chart is: Letís Dance.ALBUM OF THE YEARMOODYMANN – Moodymann (KDJ)His every release is anticipated and obsessed over then taken apart and picked to pieces. Most of the time the man from Detroit comes up trumps. So for him to release and album that stands up to the most intense scrutiny and for that album to find its way straight into our number one spot is something of an achievement. While Moodymann the man splits opinion, Moodymann the DJ and Moodymann the producer seem to be universally praised and this album will only add to that ardent fandom. In short, it’s bloody brilliant: full of jazz and groove and vibe. It's even got Moodymann singing, rapping and it’s all packaged in a film of down right dirty-ness. A worthy winner, then. Make sure you get yourself a copy – if you can get one.
