Better Lait Than Never

Sketchy snack foods, Edmonton Oilers rumours, and the NHL salary cap

Ep. 28

Your work week is 60% of the way through and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help power you through to the weekend.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at the Good Life after I asked a question on Twitter that had me in stitches. For my money, this had to be the most fun I've had while recording Better Lait Than Never because the answers you fine folks chipped in with on my question of the day had me dying from laughter. Not knowing what to expect, I asked all of you what is the go-to snack that you make for yourselves that other people think is weird and the responses were absolutely fantastic and beyond anything I ever expected. From there, I covered the latest Oilers news and rumors, specifically what's happening in net after some insiders were speculating this past week on the future of Mike Smith and whether or not he'll be back between the pipes in Edmonton next year. I mean, the guy is 40 years old at this point and you'd have to think that getting ready for an NHL season would be tough on the ol' body. Sticking with the Oilers, I also looked at the absurdity that is the NHL CBA after Bill Daly announced today that there would be no recapture penalty for Chicago if Duncan Keith decides to retire with one year left on his deal. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days in your life.

  • 139. Zach Hyman gets to 50 goals and the Evander Kane situation

    44:54
We've passed the halfway point of the week, which means a fresh episode of your mom's favourite is set and ready to massage your earholes. On this week's Better Lait Than Never, we're looking at Zach Hyman's 50th goal, Connor Brown's heater, Connor McDavid chasing 100 assists, and whatever else has been going on over the last seven days.Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started the podcast with a dose of random topics from the past week. From picking up my new whip on Friday to diving into Big Brother Canada to talking about our love for pets, it was undoubtedly a busy week outside of work for yours truly. A lot of life happened in not a lot of time.Turning the show back to the Oilers, how could I not start with Zach Hyman hitting 50 goals for the first time, and how the reaction to that goal was all over the map depending on which fanbase you reside in? Even though we all knew the milestone was coming, watching him actually hit it was a moment a lot of Oilers fans will remember for a very long time.I also looked at the Evander Kane situation that has been bubbling up around here lately. The forward was scratched for maintenance for Sunday's game against the Ottawa Senators, but according to Elliotte Friedman, it seems like the move was actually a healthy scratch. Regardless of what the truth looks like, what we know to be true is that the Oilers will need Kane to be at his best down the stretch if the team is going to make noise in the playoffs.💻 Website: https://oilersnation.com/ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/himynameisbaggedmilk/Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jsbmbaggedmilkSHOUTOUT TO OUR SPONSORS!!👍🏼Bet 99: https://bet99-8390734.hs-sites.com/oilersnation-b99net-giveaway👍🏼 Star Mechanical: https://starmechanical.ca/ 👍🏼 Snow Valley Aerial Park: https://www.snowvalley.ca/aerial-park/👍🏼Rainbow Valley Campground: https://www.rainbow-valley.com/Want to leave a voicemail for next week’s show? • 138. The Oilers won and Connor Brown scored so I bought a new car... kinda

    01:12:35
It's Wednesday afternoon, and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is set and ready to massage your ear holes.Kicking off the podcast, I got started with some big news from my personal life. Thanks to our friends at Sherwood Ford the Giant, I bought myself my first new car in over 15 years. Needless to say, it's been a minute. As much as I loved my old Escape, some repair needs relative to the worth of the vehicle meant that it was time for an upgrade, and that's exactly what I did.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I offered another look at our new friends in Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick, and Troy Stetcher after all three players made an impact on the ice over the last week. I also looked back at the games the Oilers played since the last show, including Wednesday's win over the Caps, Saturday's loss to the Avalanche, and last night's sloppy win over the Canadiens. Even though the Oilers only played a couple of gamesI wrapped up this week's podcast with a little bit of betting talk for our friends at Bet99, offered up an RSB about winter driving, and capped things off with another round of voicemails that ranged from Oilers talk to reality TV to more cereal talk and everything in between. Once again, this podcast always makes me laugh, and I'm so very grateful for the levels of participation by the wonderful BLTN community that keeps moving. • 137. Can the Oilers catch the Canucks, a BLTN giveaway, and the great cereal debate

    01:27:56
No better way to celebrate the halfway mark of your work week than with a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never! This week, we're talking Edmonton Oilers, cereal, daylight savings time, and anything else thatKicking off this week's BLTN, I got the podcast started with a chat about cereal. That's right, cereal. Recently, I started buying a bunch of cereals I used to love as a kid to see if they still hold up, but what I didn't expect was the passionate debate about which one is the best. You, fine folks, were incredibly passionate about the subject, and I had so much fun going through everyone's takes about which cereals are best and which are the worst.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the hockey talk with plenty of excitement because I had tickets to Wednesday's game versus the Capitals, marking my first trip to Rogers Place in quite some time. From there, I looked at our new friends Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick, and Troy Stecher and gave my first thoughts on how everyone is doing with their new team so far. I also wanted to give some love to Calvin Pickard. The guy is playing his ass off between the pipes right now despite so many people doubting him, and I think it's only fair to pump his tires a little bit after a fantastic performance against the Penguins.I wrapped up this week's podcast with a little bit of betting talk for our friends at Bet99, offered up an RSB about dog maintenance, and capped things off with another round of voicemails that ranged from Oilers talk to reality TV to your favourite cereals and everything in between. This podcast never ceases to make me laugh, and I'm so very grateful for the levels of participation by the wonderful BLTN community that keeps moving this show forward. • 136. The Trade Deadline Reaction Episode

    25:00
The Edmonton Oilers made a handful of moves at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, but they weren't able to plug all of the holes they probably have. That left many Oilers fans wanting and wishing Ken Holland was able to do more than pick up Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick, and Troy Stecher. Were there even options for him to upgrade beyond those three? Were there deals they should have been in on?I gave my take on the Oilers' trade deadline and also read all of your feedback about how you thought the Oilers fared in the NHL's annual swap 'n shop. • 135. The Oilers acquire Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick in first Silly Szn trades

    01:02:30
There's nothing quite like a big trade in the hours leading up to the new episode of Better Lait Than Never to liven up the podcast, amirite? Today, Ken Holland pulled the trigger on a trade that saw the Oilers send out their first (2024), fourth (2025), and fifth-round (2025) picks in exchange for Adam Henrique, Sam Carrick, a seventh-round pick, and Ty Taylor, and I want to talk about it.Before we got to the trade talk, I had to walk through a few different things first, including the amazing Brunch for Ben that happened last weekend and Greta and the bonus episode of BLTN that I recorded with Dooks. For my money, Dooks' visit to town went about as well as it possibly could have, and I was very grateful to be able to spend a little bit of time with him. I was also happy that he was able to attend the Brunch for Ben that happened on Saturday, marking the first Nation event he was able to attend as well.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, how could I not start with the massive trade that happened this afternoon? The Oilers sent out three picks—a first, fourth, and fifth—to acquire Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick at 75% retained while also grabbing a seventh-rounder and depth goalie as add-ins. While I personally like this trade a whole lot, it wasn't surprising to see how many Oilers fans were left wanting after the team spent its best trade chip on a middle-six forward and depth centreman.Lastly, I wrapped up this week's podcast with a little bit of betting talk for our friends at Bet99, played a guest RSB from Nick, and capped things off with another round of voicemails that ranged from Oilers talk to reality TV to anything else that was on your mind. Once again, this podcast never ceases to make me laugh, and I'm so very grateful for the levels of participation by the wonderful BLTN community that keep moving this show forward.Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.Want to leave a voicemail for next week’s show? • 134. Bonus episode with Dooks!

    01:20:59
Finally, after months of trying to figure it out we recorded an episode together and it was an absolute blast. Dooks is in Edmonton to watch some games and that meant we had to record a show together.
  • 133. Connor McDavid the apple tree, Oilers trade rumours, and so many sports docs

    52:54
The best part of your Wednesday has finally arrived, as the new episode of Better Lait Than Never is prepped, edited, and ready for your ear holes. This week, I'm talking about the slog that is this latest stretch of Oilers hockey and what it's going to take to get out of this little funk they're in.Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started with a random collection of topics, including the hellish flu I was battling over the weekend and how it caused me to lose eight pounds in only three days. On the bright side, having the flu gave me an excuse to sit around and watch TV all day while my summer diet plan got a nice jump start without having to set foot in a gym. I also previewed the special episode of BLTN that will be happening with Dooks tomorrow down at Nation HQ and how I couldn't be more excited for this episode to finally happen.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with a look at the team's three-game losing streak and how it was so massive that they were able to snap the skid against the LA Kings. Obviously, no one wants to lose games, but having the Oilers find a way to get the job done against a Kings team that's been surging since their coaching change was a massive win in more ways than one.Looking ahead to next week's trade deadline, I ran through some of the latest rumours surrounding the Oilers and offered my take on whether or not I think the mentioned names would help. Most notably, Frank Seravalli mentioned this morning on Daily Faceoff Live that the Oilers could emerge as legitimate contenders to land Pavel Buchnevich from the St. Louis Blues, and if a trade like that happened, it could end up being a game changer for this team down the stretch.Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.
  • 132. Oilers fans everywhere in Arizona, Bruins preview, and a #NationVacation recap

    01:07:00
We're back from the Arizona #NationVacation, the Oilers had a home game in another country, and that meant there was a whole lot to talk about on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.Kicking off this week’s podcast, I had to get started with a recap from this weekend’s #NationVacation to Arizona, and how it was one of the greatest weekends of my life. From the amazing people who joined us to the incredible atmosphere at Mullett Arena, this trip was one for the ages, and I’m so grateful to have been able to experience it.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with a look back at the two-game win streak that started with one in Dallas before being extended in Arizona and how the boys will need an effort more like the one they gave against the Stars if the plan is to beat the Bruins. With RNH on the shelf with illness and the PK continuing to struggle, the Oilers desperately need to tighten the details of their game if they plan to win some of these very important home games before the end of the month.Lastly, I wrapped up this week's Better Lait Than Never with a Righteous Sack Beating about airport food costs after spending a bunch of time in transit this past week. You gotta love getting gauged when they know exactly how excited one is to go on a holiday. I also dove into the latest batch of voicemails that ranged from Oilers thoughts, to TV, to helping me recap the #NationVacation. • 131. Connor McDavid's six-point night, Oilers rumours, and some love for Cody Ceci

    01:14:00
What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than by listening to a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never with that special someone? This week, we're discussing the three games we've missed since the last podcast, going to see City and Colour at Rogers Place, trade deadline rumours, and a whole lot more.Kicking off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a recap of City and Colour from Saturday night at Rogers Place. At first, I was nervous about skipping the Oilers game in favour of a concert, but the tone quickly changed as I was checking the score from my seat. It's amazing how much my mood can be affected by the score in an Oilers game, but the good news is that Dallas Green did everything he could to make me forget about it.Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I needed to talk about Connor McDavid's ridiculous night that he had against the Detroit Red Wings. Of course, watching the captain do things that don't make sense is pretty common around here, but even he had never put up the kind of night he had last night at Rogers Place. Every time we think he's reached his limit in terms of blowing our minds, he pulls another trick out of his hat that has the hockey world collectively rebooting their hard drives.Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. As always, the BLTN listeners brought the heat and hearing all of your thoughts was easily my favourite part of this week's show.
