Getting the Oilers Back on Track

Ep. 81

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never set and ready to guide you through what's left of the week. In this week's episode, we're talking about the Oilers' loss in Game 1, what the boys need to do better in Game 2, the NHL playoffs, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a quick recap of how much fun it is for the Oilers to be back in the playoffs and how much fun I was having in the hours leading up to puck drop. From having out with the squad at the office to making my way down to the Moss Pit before the game, it just felt good to have the postseason back in our wonderful city. And for the first 40 minutes of that game, it looked like the day that started out so beautifully was going to wrap up in celebration. Unfortunately, the Hockey Gords had other plans. After what was a fantastic first 40 minutes by the Oilers, the boys collapsed in spectacular fashion and ended up losing Game 1 in overtime. With a massive opportunity to tie up the series coming up in a few hours, I then dove into what needs to happen for the Oilers to get the job done in Game 2 and tie the series before it heads back to Los Angeles. In this week's Righteous Sack Beating, I dove into the dummies that were throwing garbage on the ice after the OT winner and why acting like such a baby is so incredibly embarrassing. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

  • 245. Closing out 2025, Andrew Mangiapane rumours, and time is a flat circle

    57:34||Ep. 245
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers year in review, Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours, Calvin Pickard, Connor McDavid's heater, and much more.I kicked off this week's episode with a look at the Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours that kicked off this past week. Given that we haven't even made it to the midway point of his first season as an Oiler, it's hard to understand why these UFA veterans keep going sideways once they land in Edmonton. Is it a role thing? Is it too hard to play with Connor or Leon? I also spent some time on Calvin Pickard's incredible showing against the Winnipeg Jets, and gave the Oilers' backup plenty of love for stepping up when the team needed him. Is our pal Cal doing enough to save his Oilers career?Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quiet again this week, but everyone's takes were still all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.Want to leave a voicemail for next week’s show? • 244. A little BLTN Christmas Episode

    34:27||Ep. 244
    Did I plan to do an episode today? No. Did I see a bunch of voicemails that made me feel the need to do one? Yes. Merry Christmas!
  • 243. Oilers win the Jarry vs. Skinner game, and Leon Draisaitl's 1000th point

    01:08:50||Ep. 243
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Jarry vs. Skinner game, Vasily Podkolzin's progression, and much more.I kicked off this week's episode with a look back at last night's matchup between the Oilers and Penguins. Obviously, this game was on everyone's mind, as it would be the first head-to-head between Tristan Jarry and Stuart Skinner since they were traded for each other only four days before. As much as I was thrilled about the result, it was also hard not to feel bad for our former friend while he was getting shelled by his old club. Not only did Skinner get pumped for five goals, but he also had to stand in his crease while the Leon Draisaitl 1000-point celebration was happening only feet to his left. Needless to say, it was one of the weirder December wins we could have ever watched.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating about winter driving, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was hilarious again this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. • 242. EMERGENCY POD: Oilers trade Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak for Tristan Jarry and Samuel Poulin

    19:11||Ep. 242
    Despite beating the Red Wings 4-1 last night, the Edmonton Oilers pulled the trigger on a Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak for Tristan Jarry and Samuel Poulin trade with Pittsburgh. They also sent a 3rd round pick to Nashville in exchange for Spencer Stastney as a means of replacing Kulak. All of this happening before 9 in the morning? Holy hell.
  • 241. Oilers win two beauties then lose to Buffalo... round and round we go.

    48:05||Ep. 241
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about whether the Oilers are actually turning the corner, playing down to competition, some love for Vasily Podkolzin, and much more.We were having a fun handful of days before last night's loss to the Sabres, weren't we? After demolishing the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets, Oilers fans were feeling pretty good about where the team was at. Unfortunately, feeling better about the team made last night's loss to the Buffalo Sabres land like a Looney Tunes-style anvil on the head. Despite being the better team, the Oilers were outworked for most of the first two periods, setting up another incredibly frustrating loss. And what started as a day filled with hope ended in a disappointing finish that should have been avoided from the start. Getting one point was nice, but missing out on the second sure looks like a problem.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Dooks, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was hilarious again this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. • 240. No one wants to talk about Oilers silver linings after losses but I do

    55:59||Ep. 240
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about whether the Oilers are turning the corner, kept up with the goalie rumours, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' return, and much more.Just when you might be reaching max frustration levels, I'm back with another round of wondering if the Edmonton Oilers are finally turning the corner. After a strong showing in Seattle on the weekend, the Oilers returned home to face the red-hot Minnesota Wild, and I'm wondering if I'm the only one who wasn't overly pissed off about that loss. I also checked in on the latest round of goalie rumours after things had quietened down quite a bit in terms of Stan Bowman pulling the trigger to get one. Will we get a new goalie before the off-season? Is Stuart Skinner heating up, pushing off the decision for a while longer? Only time will give us the answers, but that didn't stop me from wading in with my takes anyway.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Kyle, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. • 239. Oilers blown out again, goalie rumours, and a whole lot of defensive problems

    01:05:03||Ep. 239
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers' most recent blowout, goalie rumours, players coming back from injuries, and much more.Just when you think the Edmonton Oilers might be turning things around, we've got another debacle on home ice that has the fanbase questioning their sanity and what the hell is going on around here. After a strong finish to their seven-game road trip, the Oilers returned home to get completely dismantled by the visiting Dallas Stars, and that loss has people running through the same old questions again. When will Stan Bowman trade for a goalie? Do they need more help on defence? Can this team figure it out? Only time will give us the answers, but that didn't stop me from wading in with my takes anyway.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Eoin, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. • 238. More Oilers struggles, injuries, and a sense that the sky is falling

    59:56||Ep. 238
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers' offensive struggles, Darnell Nurse rumours, more injuries, and much more.Just when you think the Edmonton Oilers might be turning the corner, another catastrophic loss sends the fanbase back into a spiral, and that's happened after the 5-1 beatdown in Buffalo on Monday. Not only did the boys lose to the worst team in the Eastern Conference, but they never even looked like they were in the fight. And when you lose a game that badly to a team as mediocre as the Sabres, the result is another round of questions about the team's construction, the guys who are struggling, and everything in between. Never a dull moment around here.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the LRT construction, then wrapped up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and hearing everyone's takes was so much fun. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. • 237. The Oilers rollercoaster goes zoom Pt. 3084

    01:02:14||Ep. 237
    It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about spending a couple of days in Toronto and Montreal, the Oilers' comeback against Columbus, Trent Frederic's fight, and much more.It's a strange time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. We have high expectations for the team around these parts, and for the third year in a row, their start to the season has been anything but spectacular. It gets even more interesting when I've been to Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal in a single week. Sticking with the Oilers, how could you not talk about the wild game they had against Columbus, when the team both got booed on home ice and also came back for the win? Part of the story from Monday night was the fight Trent Frederic got into with Mathieu Olivier, and it didn't take long to see the mismatch there when the boys started chuckin' 'em.Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about airport food prices, then wrapped up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was very quiet again this week, but the limited messages were still fun anyway. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts.
