A Gay Dads Journey From Childhood in Rural Ireland to Marraige and Family Life

Season 8, Ep. 7

A Gay Dads Journey From Childhood in Rural Ireland to Marraige and Family Life with Seamus Kearney Martone.

I found this episode hugely insightful, to think we grew up in the same town but had such different experiences. Castlerea is a wonderful locality and community, but like any rural Irish town in the 1980's and 1990's, fear of anything other than a conventional relationship was an underlying current. It wasn't out of hate in my view, it was out of lack of exposure and diversity. Anyone who was in any way 'not the norm' left town as soon as they could to find a peer group they felt at home with, so people never got used to diversity within the community.

Castlerea is a place I am proud to call home, and like most towns it is now mostly a diverse and welcoming community. I was always unaware of how Seamus or anyone else may have felt growing up in Castlerea, it didn't occur to me and I remained oblivious. The world has moved on, technology supports awareness and diversity, I love to see people expressing themselves truthfully and openly. I am concerned that with rising levels of hate globally we may end up going backwards - and that is why pride month is so so important! Never tolerate hate. Love between one person and another is a beautiful thing and quite frankly doesn't concern you unless you are one of them! Lets embrace differences of sexuality, culture, and beliefs so that no community feels oppressed - there is room for us all and we learn from each other.

  • 8. Dr Suzanne Crowe - Why the RSV Immunisation Programme for this Winter is not enough

    31:43||Season 8, Ep. 8
    Dr. Suzanne Crowe, a pediatric intensivist, discusses her role in intensive care medicine and the impact of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) on the health system. She emphasizes the need for vaccinating babies against RSV how crucial it is to expand the planned programme for this Winter. Dr. Crowe highlights the trauma that babies and their families experience when a baby is hospitalized with RSV and the strain it puts on healthcare resources. She calls for a more holistic approach to healthcare and the prioritization of children's health.TakeawaysAccessible and digestible information on child health issues is crucial for parents and caregivers.Vaccinating babies against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can prevent hospitalizations and reduce the burden on the healthcare system.The hospitalization of babies with RSV has a significant impact on families, including emotional and financial strain.A comprehensive and widespread vaccination program for RSV can help address health inequalities and protect vulnerable populations.A more holistic approach to healthcare, prioritizing children's health, is needed to improve outcomes and reduce healthcare burdens.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Background01:27 Importance of Accessible Information on Child Health04:32 The Impact of RSV on the Healthcare System08:04 The Importance of Vaccinating Babies Against RSV09:09 Challenges in Implementing a Widespread Vaccination Program14:25 Addressing Health Inequalities Through Vaccination Programs27:29 Prioritizing Children's Health in Healthcare SystemsSeason 8 is supported by Salin plus.Have you ever felt concerned about the quality of the air around you? • 7. Why the new RSV Immunisation Programme is simply NOT enough.

    32:12||Season 8, Ep. 7
    I wanted to be happy when I saw the headlines... I've campaigned for RSV immunisation a lot over the last year since they were approved by the EMA.I did NOT think I'd have to revisit this topic after I read the finer detail.Unfortunately Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly has launched a half baked plan which will leave hundreds of babies still facing hospitalisation and ICU again this Winter.I don't like to give criticism without being constructive, so in this episode, I speak to Minister Donnelly to try to implore him to see the solutions to any impediments he foresees as an unnecessary challenge. If he is not answerable, then it's worth asking the question...who exactly is?
