  • Two Elderly Men Die in Hospital Falls

    01:57|
Two elderly men, David Ward and Dr. Debapriya Ghosh, tragically lost their lives due to unsupervised falls in the overcrowded emergency department of St Georges Hospital in South London. The senior coroner attributed their deaths to a lack of beds and nurses, issuing a stern warning to Health Secretary Wes Streeting about the potential for more fatalities. David Ward, a seventy-six-year-old, arrived at the hospital on February seventh with frailty, confusion, and a likely infection. Despite his fall risk, nurses did not assess him, and he received minimal care after his daughter left. He was found with a head injury and passed away three days later. The inquest ruled his death an accident due to neglect, suggesting proper supervision could have saved him. Dr. Ghosh, an eighty-three-year-old, was admitted on February ninth with delirium, an infection, and heart problems. Due to the hospitals overcrowding, he waited hours in a corridor before getting a bed. Staff did not check his fall risk until nearly midnight, and despite his condition worsening overnight, no one reassessed him. He fell unnoticed around eight thirty AM on February tenth and died the following day. The inquests found both deaths preventable with better nursing oversight, particularly one-to-one care for these frail patients. Families had been providing much of the care before leaving at night. The coroner emphasized staff distress from impossible workloads and warned that without more resources, nurses might leave, and risks would persist. St Georges Hospital has implemented immediate changes, such as hiring more staff, mandating fall assessments, and expanding units to free up beds. However, the coroner noted that emergency departments remain extremely busy, and the government must act to match demand with staff and space. Checkout Solipillow.com
