Book Club #75 - Stand Up, Barry Goldman - Richard meets comedian, musician, script writer and inventor of the phrase “Comedy is the new rock n roll”, Dave Cohen. They discuss why he wanted to write a fictionalised account of the comedy scene of the late 70s, how it was inspired by true events and seeing Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson performing in a porn cinema in Edinburgh. Plus living and working through the early days of alternative comedy, writing for Horrible Histories, the Young Ones style house in which Rich, Stewart Lee, Al Murray and the true comedic genius of the group Mike Cosgrave all lived, the failing garment industry in Leeds in the 1970s, Guns and Moses, whether alternative comedy was truly feminist, why Arthur Smith is doing the audiobook, how the nineties changed comedy and Dave’s upcoming second part of a trilogy: Barry Goldman: The Wilderness Years.
