In October of 2000, my family began receiving messages that none of us understood.
At first, they seemed like ordinary misunderstandings.
One afternoon, my workplace receptionist told me my wife had called.
According to the message, our daughter's car wouldn't start, and I needed to pick her up from college.
I drove across town.
But when I arrived, her car was perfectly fine.
My wife had never called.
A few days later, my son's supervisor received a similar message.
Someone claiming to be me had asked him to stay late at work.
I hadn't made that call either.
Then my wife's regular appointment was mysteriously changed.
Three separate incidents.
Three different people.
And every message had one thing in common.
Someone was changing where our family members were supposed to be.
We started writing everything down.
Then we created a secret phrase.
Two simple words that only the four of us knew.
If anyone needed to change plans, they had to use that phrase.
For a few days, it seemed to work.
Until one afternoon, my receptionist delivered another message.
It supposedly came from my son.
And it contained our secret phrase.
The exact words nobody outside our family was supposed to know.
That evening, we gathered around the kitchen table.
For the first time, we began questioning each other.
Who had shared the phrase?
Who could we trust?
And how did someone know so much about our daily lives?
Then, the following morning, I discovered an envelope attached to our front door.
Inside was a note.
It contained observations about every member of my family.
And one final word.
BETTER.
Whoever had been calling us wasn't simply making random phone calls.
Someone had been studying our routines.
Learning how we reacted.
And slowly turning ordinary messages into something none of us could explain.
But as Halloween approached, we began to realize those calls might have been leading toward something much bigger.
And the person behind them knew far more about our family than we ever imagined.
