In February of 2001, I was thirty years old and living alone in a small rented house outside Eugene, Oregon.
Everything started when I came home from work one evening and found something strange in my bedroom.
A key.
Lying in the middle of my pillow.
It looked exactly like my front door key.
Same shape.
Same little blue rubber cover.
But I was still holding my own keys.
I searched the house.
Nobody was there.
Nothing had been taken.
And there was no sign that anyone had forced their way inside.
I called the police.
The locks were changed that evening.
I thought that would be the end of it.
But a few days later, I came home and found my kitchen chair pulled into the middle of the room.
Then my bedroom radio was playing when I returned from work.
Someone seemed to be entering my house while I was away.
And I had no idea how.
Then things became much more personal.
I was considering a new job in Seattle.
Only a few people knew about it.
But one afternoon, I found an envelope beneath my front door.
Inside was a photocopy of my private job offer.
Someone had circled the start date.
And written a question beneath it.
ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO GO?
I became afraid that someone was watching my life far more closely than I realized.
Then, a few nights later, my telephone rang at 1:17 in the morning.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
For a moment, the line was completely quiet.
Then I heard a click.
And a recording began playing.
It was my own voice.
I recognized the conversation immediately.
It was something I had said privately inside a friend's car.
A conversation I had never expected anyone else to hear.
I stood beside my bed, gripping the telephone, trying to understand who could have recorded me.
When the recording stopped, I whispered,
Who is this?
A quiet voice answered.
You always leave.
Then the line went silent.
I thought someone was trying to frighten me into staying.
But I had no idea how much this person already knew.
Or how long they had been listening.
