In September of 1981, my wife and I moved into a quiet neighborhood outside Columbus, Ohio, with our two grown children.
The house was completely ordinary.
Three bedrooms.
A finished basement.
A large backyard.
Friendly neighbors on both sides.
Nothing about it seemed frightening.
But within days of moving in, strange things started happening.
It began with our telephone.
My wife was talking to her sister when someone apparently picked up another receiver inside our house.
We checked the upstairs telephone.
Nobody was there.
A few nights later, it happened again.
Then our nineteen-year-old daughter, Elise, told us something that made me uncomfortable.
She had been washing her face in the upstairs bathroom when she noticed someone walking through the hallway behind her.
An older man.
Dark hair.
A blue shirt.
She saw him clearly in the mirror.
But when she turned around...
Nobody was there.
I told her she was probably tired.
Maybe she had mistaken a shadow for a person.
But then we started hearing strange noises beneath the kitchen floor.
A dry cough.
A faint scraping sound.
And something moving near the basement wall.
I had spent most of my adult life repairing machinery, so I was determined to find a reasonable explanation.
Eventually, I discovered something hidden behind the basement paneling.
Something that explained several of the strange things happening inside our house.
But it didn't explain the man my daughter kept seeing.
And even after we believed the problem had been solved...
She saw him again.
This time, he wasn't walking through the hallway.
He was standing perfectly still.
And according to my daughter, he was looking at something behind her.
Something near the stairs.
What we eventually discovered changed the way I remembered everything that had happened inside that house.
