As Marcus would say, Rusticus had taught him to never be satisfied with just “getting the gist” of things he read, but encouraged him to read deeply, repeatedly, and forcefully. Considering how many times Marcus quotes Epictetus from memory in <a href=\"https://store.dailystoic.com/pages/meditations\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Meditations</em></a>, it’s likely that he treated this copy of <a href=\"https://www.thepaintedporch.com/products/philosophy4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Discourses</em></a> like a bible, returning to it time and time again. Perhaps it is even this book that Marcus was referring to when he half-seriously said he needed to ‘throw away [his] books’ because they were consuming all his attention. Certainly, it would have been one of the books Marcus was seen reading as the rest of Rome eagerly watched the gladiators fight.</p><p><br></p><p>✉️<strong>&nbsp;Sign up for the Daily Stoic email:&nbsp;</strong><a href=\"http://dailystoic.com/dailyemail\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail</a></p><p>🏛 Check out the&nbsp;<a href=\"https://store.dailystoic.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Stoic Store</a>&nbsp;for Stoic inspired products, signed books, and more.</p><p>📱 Follow us:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/dailystoic/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram</a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://twitter.com/dailystoic\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter</a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/dailystoic\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube</a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.tiktok.com/@daily_stoic\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">TikTok</a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/dailystoic\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a></p>","author_name":"Daily Stoic | Backyard Ventures"}
