The Mag Pod Ep 13 – Newcastle United Beat Palace, Schar and Burn Deliver, and Eddie Howe to Man Utd?
Episode Summary – 53 Minutes
Newcastle United’s 2-0 victory away to Crystal Palace, the return of Fabian Schär and Dan Burn at centre-back, and speculation linking Eddie Howe with the Manchester United job dominate this week’s Mag Pod. Jamie Smith is joined by Simon Cahill and David Hutchinson to discuss a much-needed Premier League win, whether Newcastle have finally found some defensive stability, and what lies ahead as the Magpies prepare to face Everton twice in the space of a few days.
The mood is considerably brighter after Newcastle's win at Selhurst Park, although the three hosts have rather different experiences of watching the match. Simon admits to sleeping through much of the first half, while Hutch struggles to find a television showing the game during his holiday in Turkey. Thankfully, Newcastle's second-half performance gives everyone something positive to discuss.
The decision to restore Schar and Burn to the starting line-up comes under the spotlight, with the pair bringing experience, organisation and composure to a defence that has struggled this season. There's also praise for Jacob Murphy, Nick Woltemade's replacement William Osula, Nico González and goalkeeper Horníček, alongside a typically chaotic Newcastle United history quiz about the club's oldest Premier League players.
Attention then turns to the wider league picture. Are Newcastle supporters right to remain cautious despite the victory? Would a 14th-place finish still represent an acceptable outcome? And what should fans make of Sunderland's struggles ahead of the next Tyne-Wear derby?
The conversation moves to Manchester United, where Eddie Howe is being linked with replacing Michael Carrick. The lads consider how Newcastle's transfer restrictions affected Howe's time on Tyneside, imagine the squad he might have built with greater financial freedom, and debate whether Old Trafford would be the right destination for their former manager.
Finally, there's League Cup trivia, a look at Everton's cup history and a discussion of Newcastle's upcoming cup and league double-header against the Toffees. Can the Magpies build on Sunday's result and keep their hopes of another trophy alive?
