Canada–India relations are entering a new phase under Prime Minister Mark Carney, with both countries moving toward stronger economic and diplomatic ties. Canada and India have resumed trade discussions, including negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), while Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have emphasized rebuilding the bilateral relationship.
But this renewed relationship is also raising concerns within parts of the Canadian Sikh community. Some Canadians have questioned whether economic and diplomatic interests are being prioritized over unresolved concerns involving human rights, foreign interference, and allegations affecting Sikh Canadians. Government consultations on the proposed trade agreement also recorded organized opposition to deeper engagement with India on these grounds.
