Yesterday in Sports recaps a dramatic Wednesday across international soccer, the MLB playoffs, WNBA postseason, NFL, NBA, MLS and NHL, beginning with Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from Portugal’s national-team camp.
Chris Horwedel breaks down Ronaldo leaving Portugal ahead of its match with Denmark, the public disagreement surrounding his role under Jorge Jesus and why the episode creates major questions about the final stage of his international career without yet amounting to a retirement.
In Major League Baseball, the Yankees, White Sox and Padres complete wild-card sweeps, advancing past Boston, Houston and Chicago. Philadelphia keeps its season alive with a 10-inning comeback victory over Atlanta, setting up a winner-take-all Game 3 for a spot against the Dodgers.
The WNBA playoffs deliver another huge performance as Arike Ogunbowale scores a postseason-record 45 points to lead Dallas past Golden State in overtime. Atlanta also completes its sweep of Washington to reach the semifinals.
The NFL’s biggest transaction sends Joey Porter Jr. from Pittsburgh to Dallas, giving the Cowboys a proven starting cornerback while the Steelers receive future draft capital. Elsewhere, D’Angelo Russell heads to Shanghai and the Philadelphia Union bring U.S. defender Mark McKenzie back from Europe.
In hockey, Colorado extends Jared Bednar and opens its season with an eight-goal performance, while Pittsburgh shuts out Philadelphia. The episode closes with South Korea reaching another Asian Games men’s soccer final, where it will face Japan.
