When people invoke 1984, they almost always invoke the surveillance. Cameras. Governments reading your messages. Big Brother watching. These concerns are real — but they are not the heart of the book.
Orwell was warning about something that happens before enforcement ever begins. Something already happening to us, in a form he would have recognised immediately. The narrowing of the range of thoughts it is possible to think.
