Tate's years patrolling Newborough and Llanddwyn before dawn meant learning a landscape of shifting dunes and wind-twisted pine, built over the buried ruins of a medieval Welsh royal court.
Walking a grassy track in the last hour before dawn, Tate spots a motionless silhouette near the crest of a hill path. Despite the growing daylight, its outline won't settle into anything he can trust, though it's plainly human in shape: head, shoulders, upright posture. He chooses not to approach it directly and carries on along a lower track instead. Minutes later, a second figure appears less than a metre from him beside a bush: upright, silent, casting no shadow, and giving no reaction at all to his presence even at that distance. He steps backward slowly, and when he looks back toward the hill, the first figure is gone entirely. Two unexplained shapes within minutes, neither one aware, or willing to show it, that he was ever there.
