Last month, a workers' comp office in Ontario cut 466 jobs after the staff helped launch the AI tool that replaced them — "we all were excited… until we found out it was making us all redundant." And a payroll company that actually counted heads at a couple thousand small businesses found the ones that turned AI on hired more people. Same technology. Opposite outcomes. The difference is what you point it at — and whether your crew hears about it from you first.

In this episode:

The people who taught the robot just got let go — by the robot. Mechanical Turk closes Sept 30 after two decades and 500,000+ workers doing label-this, sort-that for a few cents apiece. The twist: a 2023 study found close to half of them were already using ChatGPT to do it — and last week OpenAI fired the contractors who grade its answers for using AI to grade. The jobs that go first have a shape: sliced small, priced by the piece, done at a distance.

They welcomed the tool. Then the tool welcomed them out. Ontario's WSIB cut 466 jobs and closed nine offices — back-office claims roles — after a push to launch an AI claim-summary tool. The union's warning is the customer's warning: cut the desk, the phone rings longer. The mistake wasn't automating the summaries. It was the silence.

The shops that turned on AI hired more people — and they hired the do-ers. Gusto's payroll data: AI adopters grew headcount ~7% faster in year one (~10% for shops under ten people), and the hires were technicians, cooks, front desk — not more office. Big companies cut layers. You have a van with nobody in it.

Spotlight — Indeed vs. ZipRecruiter: two ways to fill that van. The meter (Indeed Sponsored Jobs — $5/day or $150/mo floor, plus a beta AI screener that collects EPA cards up front) vs. the flat rate that goes and gets them (ZipRecruiter — AI invites employed techs to apply; quote-based, roughly $300–400/mo; trial auto-converts). Which for which shop, and why half of small employers say AI-written applications made hiring harder.

The Operator's Move (tool-free): "Have the who's-next conversation before your crew has it." One sheet Sunday, ten minutes Monday — what you're automating, what you're not, and what happens to the person.

🔗 Show Notes & Sources

Story 1 — Mechanical Turk closes / raters fired for using AI

Amazon Mechanical Turk closure notice

TechRepublic — "Amazon Mechanical Turk to Shut Down Sept. 30 After 21 Years"

TechSpot — "Amazon is shutting down Mechanical Turk after more than 20 years"

CNBC — "Amazon service Bezos once called 'artificial artificial intelligence' is shutting down"

TechPolicy.Press — "Mechanical Turk is Closing.
