John Healey boosts benefits for 10 million people
Chancellor John Healey will sidestep welfare reform in the Budget, instead allocating £5.5billion for a 3.5 percent increase in payments to ten million people. At least £1billion is set aside to subsidise fuel bills for those on benefits and low incomes this winter. NHS prescription charges will be frozen at £9.90 for those not on benefits. Healey faces criticism for avoiding tough decisions on welfare spending as tax levels reach a record high.
British men charged over Iran-backed RAF Fairford plot
Nouman Essghir, aged 24, and Mohmed Abdulkarim, also 24 and wheelchair-bound, are accused of involvement in an Iran-backed plot targeting RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Essghir faces charges of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK, while Abdulkarim is charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service under the National Security Act.
Matthew Perry's sister Mia breaks silence after death
Mia Perry has spoken publicly for the first time since her brother Matthew Perry died at age 54 from a ketamine overdose at his Los Angeles home. Mia described her anger at Matthew Perry's addiction, the overwhelming grief since his death, and her anxiety as his power of attorney. She recalled nearly losing him five years earlier when his colon burst from opioid overuse. The interview appears in the Netflix documentary The One About Matthew Perry.
Israel faces gridlock after inconclusive election result
Exit polls show no clear winner in Israel's latest general election, with Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party projected to win the most seats but falling short of a majority. Gadi Eisenkot leads the main opposition, with both blocs expected to secure between 50 and 52 seats each. Arab-led parties are set to win a record 18 seats, increasing their influence. The result raises fears of prolonged coalition talks and renewed political gridlock.
Denbighshire residents sort rubbish into 12 bins
Denbighshire Council is trialling a scheme requiring residents to sort their rubbish into up to 12 separate bins, including soft plastics like crisp packets and meal wrappers. The three-month experiment follows a £22million overhaul in 2024 that introduced 11 bins. Some locals call the system overwhelming and ridiculous. Wales is pushing for more ambitious kerbside recycling, while England's rollout is delayed until 2030 due to council readiness.
