Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the United States formally siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be a “historic mistake,” as disagreements over the war in Ukraine strain relations between Washington and Kyiv.
In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press on October 18, Zelenskyy said he still considers US President Donald Trump an ally and hopes the administration will reconsider recent decisions affecting Russia policy.
The warning follows Trump’s decision to temporarily waive new sanctions against Russia, which had been approved by Congress. Washington has also pursued a deal involving Russian diesel supplies as global energy prices remain elevated.
Zelenskyy argues that easing pressure on Moscow could encourage further Russian attacks and weaken efforts to end the war. The dispute comes amid concerns in Kyiv over continued access to US military assistance, intelligence sharing and satellite communications.
The latest exchange highlights growing uncertainty over the future of US support for Ukraine and the prospects for negotiations to end Russia’s full-scale invasion.
