This is Part I of our series, ‘Why America is Afraid of Death’. In this first episode we look at America’s fear of death and compare our death rituals with various cultures around the world. This includes the Torajan culture who continue to live with their dead well after the event has occurred, an interesting Japanese ritual following cremation, and the Hindu bereavement process with community participation and where seemingly ever step is designed to teach us the concept of mortality.
We will also look at the death of my grandmother and why I found the ritual surrounding this typical Midwestern funeral to be lacking and, maybe, dangerous to our collective psyche.
Next week we will dive deeper into the history of death in America including the religious, economic, and cultural forces that shape our approach to bereavement today and continue the conversation about why this fails us as a society.
