Atmospheric scientist Dr. Nina Grant joins Green Frequency to explain stratospheric aerosol injection, or SAI, a proposed form of solar geoengineering that would introduce reflective particles into the upper atmosphere.</p><p><br></p><p>Drawing on climate and crop modeling for cocoa in Ghana and coffee in Brazil, Nina explains why lowering global temperatures may not be enough. In her modeled scenarios, SAI softened projected losses but did not return either crop to present-day yields. The conversation opens the black box of climate models, explores the importance of rainfall and agricultural management, and reveals how one planetary intervention could produce very different outcomes around the world.</p><p><br></p><p>It also confronts the much larger questions surrounding ozone loss, termination shock, climate justice, and governance. SAI would not remove carbon dioxide or replace phasing out fossil fuels. But as scientific and political interest grows, understanding what it could change, whom it might help, and who gets to decide is becoming a public question.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Episode Guest:</strong> Dr. Nina Grant</p><p>Read Dr. Grant’s<a href=\"https://login.proxy.libraries.rutgers.edu/login?qurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.proquest.com%2Fdissertations-theses%2Ftropical-agriculture-responses-stratospheric%2Fdocview%2F3340434562%2Fse-2%3Faccountid%3D13626\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> dissertation</a> and watch a <a href=\"https://vimeo.com/1179683219?share=copy\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">short video explainer&nbsp;</a></p><p>Review Dr. Grant’s other publication on <a href=\"https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Ja6cgUwAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google Scholar</a></p><p>Connect with <a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/nina-grant-2021/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Grant on LinkedIn</a> or visit Dr. Grant’s <a href=\"https://ninagrant.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">website</a></p><p>Learn more about SAI at <a href=\"http://solargeo.org/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">solargeo.org</a>&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Green Frequency Ep. 1<a href=\"https://shows.acast.com/green-frequency/episodes/climate-change-where-are-we-now\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">: <strong>Climate change | Where are we now?</strong></a></p><p><br></p><p><strong>5 episode of Oceanography on marine climate intervention:&nbsp;</strong></p><p><br></p><p><br></p><ol><li><a href=\"https://shows.acast.com/oceanography/episodes/mcdr-can-the-ocean-store-carbon\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mCDR: Can the Ocean Store Our Carbon for Centuries?</a></li><li><a href=\"https://shows.acast.com/oceanography/episodes/mcb-marine-cloud-brightening\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Cloud Brightening: Can Brighter Clouds Cool the Planet?</a></li><li><a href=\"https://shows.acast.com/oceanography/episodes/sai-stratospheric-aerosol-injection\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Stratospheric Aerosol Injection: Should We Reflect More Sunlight?</a></li><li><a href=\"https://shows.acast.com/oceanography/episodes/a-natural-experiment-in-the-sky-shipping-clouds-and-climate\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">A Natural Experiment in the Sky: Shipping, Clouds, and Climate</a></li><li><a href=\"https://shows.acast.com/oceanography/episodes/solar-geoengineering\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Solar Geoengineering: Who Gets to Decide?</a></li></ol><p><br></p><p>Explore the <a href=\"http://pineforestpods.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pine Forest Media</a> digital ecosystem on our <a href=\"http://pineforestpods.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">website</a></p><p>Follow us on Social Media @pineforestmedia</p><p><br></p><p>Cover Art by <a href=\"https://laurelawong.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Laurel Wong</a></p><p>Theme music by <a href=\"http://nelaruizcomposer.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nela Ruiz</a></p><p>Find some more Pine Forest Media podcasts below</p><p><br></p><p>Listen to Oceanography on <a href=\"https://open.spotify.com/show/6cg6LgAEvCP32rj24KixpP\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify</a> or <a href=\"https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id1826543626?mt=2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Podcasts</a></p><p>Listen to Plastic Podcast on <a href=\"https://open.spotify.com/show/4Iv20PynWeNKEZtq5O5UOj?si=MW-ZYI8zS0mUroec9T_lfA\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify</a> or <a href=\"https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/plastic-podcast/id1737963995\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Podcasts</a></p><p>Listen to South Pole on <a href=\"https://open.spotify.com/show/292f9HcD3eCI2V6hLQG2Hi\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify</a> or <a href=\"https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id1748730442?mt=2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Podcasts</a></p><p>Listen to Something in the Water on <a href=\"https://open.spotify.com/show/5HGQytPxV6FfcX03OUBXYf?si=YszhS8C4ToafplCEsEErAQ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify</a> or <a href=\"https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/something-in-the-water/id1740586381\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apple Podcasts</a></p>","author_name":"Pine Forest Media | Environmental Science Podcasts"}
