What happens when the world begins to feel unsafe?
🚗 Walking through a parking lot after dark.
🏠 Checking the doors before bed.
📱 Seeing another violent incident flash across your phone.
👀 Looking over your shoulder and wondering, “Am I really safe?”
These moments may seem small—but repeated exposure to fear can leave the soul constantly braced for impact.
📊 THE RESEARCH
This isn't simply personal observation. The American Psychological Association's Stress in America research found that 54% of American adults identified violence and crime as a significant source of stress in 2024, while 63% identified mass shootings as a significant source of stress.
But there's an important reality check: the FBI estimates that violent crime declined 9.3% nationally in 2025, including an 18.1% decline in murder.
⚖️ THE DISTINCTION
Danger is real.
But fear is not the same thing as danger.
There is a difference between:
🛡️ Wisdom and worry
👁️ Vigilance and hyper-vigilance
🧭 Being prepared and being preoccupied
📖 THE WORD
1 Peter 5:8 says:
“Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion…”
God doesn't call you to be careless.
He calls you to be sober-minded and alert—without making fear your dwelling place.
Psalm 4:8 gives us the deeper promise:
“I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, LORD, make me live in safety.”
🙏 THE TAKEAWAY
You can lock the doors.
You can take precautions.
You can use wisdom.
But you don't have to spend your life rehearsing disasters that haven't happened.
🌊 The waves may keep coming.
But you can still dwell in the shadow of the Almighty.
