Have you ever felt a strange ache of nostalgia—not for a happy memory, but for a place where you were simply waiting?
A few chords from an open-tuned guitar recently transported me nearly six decades backward—to an eight- or nine-year-old boy on a Greyhound bus traveling from Texas back home to Maryland.
I remembered an early-morning connection stop:
🟡 Sticky summer air
🔵 Buzzing fluorescent lights
🚌 A worn roadside bus station
💵 No money in my pocket
⏳ Nothing to do but wait
We weren't lost.
We were simply between places.
And that memory opened the door to something much deeper: liminal space.
Liminal comes from the Latin limen, meaning threshold.
It's the place between where you've been and where you're going.
🏥 A hospital waiting room.
✈️ An empty airport at midnight.
🛣️ A lonely highway.
🏠 An empty house after someone is gone.
👤 A person standing between one chapter of life and the next.
And perhaps most profoundly:
Human life itself.
James reminds us:
“For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.”
— James 4:14
🌫️ Here for a moment.
⌛ Then gone.
Paul tells us that “the whole creation has been groaning” and that we ourselves groan within, eagerly waiting for redemption. — Romans 8:22–23
Something inside us knows:
This isn't home.
Hebrews 11 says God's people confessed that they were:
“foreigners and temporary residents on the earth.”
Why?
Because they were seeking a homeland. 🏠
And Scripture says they desired “a better place—a heavenly one.”
Here's the difference Jesus makes:
The believer still feels the ache of living in a temporary world.
But now you know where the bus is going. 🚌➡️🏠
You're not stranded at the connection stop.
You're not abandoned.
You're not wandering aimlessly.
You're on your way home.
And one day:
“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:54
🔥 The waiting will end.
🌅 The journey will be complete.
🏠 The traveler will finally arrive.
A song 🎸, a quiet morning 🌅, or an empty highway 🛣️ gives you that strange feeling of being somewhere between places...
Don't fight it.
Listen.
Perhaps your soul is simply remembering something profound:
If you belong to Christ, you're not lost.
You're going Home. ✨
