The Phoenix Lights, or the phenomenon over Phoenix, is one of the most famous UFO sightings in modern times and occurred on March 13, 1997, over Phoenix, Arizona, as well as parts of Nevada and Mexico. Thousands of witnesses reported seeing mysterious lights in the sky, arranged in a formation that stretched across several hundred kilometers. The phenomenon can be divided into two separate events: a large V-shaped formation of lights that slowly moved across the sky and a series of stationary lights that appeared above Phoenix later that same evening.
People from different backgrounds, including police officers, pilots, and military personnel, described seeing an enormous, silent craft shaped like a “V” or a “boomerang” slowly hovering over the city. Many witnesses claimed that it was several football fields in size and that it blocked out the stars as it passed. The incident caused considerable commotion and debate, especially because the military initially denied any involvement. The U.S. Air Force later explained that the lights were the result of flares dropped from military aircraft during an exercise at the nearby Barry Goldwater Range. However, this explanation has been questioned by many who believe that it does not fully explain the eyewitness accounts describing a massive craft.
The Phoenix Lights have since become one of the most well-known and widely debated UFO phenomena in modern times. The incident has inspired documentaries, books, and conspiracy theories and continues to fascinate both skeptics and UFO enthusiasts around the world.
