In the New Testament, she is described as one of Jesus’ closest disciples and as the first witness to his resurrection. She is mentioned as a woman from Magdala, a town by the Sea of Galilee, and it is said that Jesus cast seven demons out of her. After that, she became one of his most devoted followers and was present at both the crucifixion and the empty tomb.

One of the most persistent misconceptions about Mary Magdalene is that she was a prostitute. This idea has no direct support in the Bible but was spread in the 6th century by Pope Gregory I, who incorrectly associated her with the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive oil. This conflation shaped her portrayal in art and literature for centuries, but in 1969 the Catholic Church acknowledged that this was a mistake. Another theory that has become widespread, particularly through works of popular culture such as The Da Vinci Code, is that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’ wife and that they had children together. This idea is based partly on Gnostic gospels, particularly the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Philip, in which she is portrayed as a person with special insight into Jesus’ teachings. However, there is no historical evidence that they were married, and most scholars dismiss the theory as speculative.

Mary Magdalene’s role within Christianity has received a new interpretation in more recent times. She has been highlighted as a strong female disciple and an important part of the early Church. In 2016, Pope Francis elevated her to the status of “Apostle of the Apostles,” recognizing her importance as the first person to bear witness to Jesus’ resurrection. Despite the many legends, an aura of mystery continues to surround her, and she continues to fascinate both believers and historians.
","author_name":"Alternativ Historia "}
