Within Egyptian tradition, the Sphinx was most often depicted as a noble and benevolent male creature—an androsphinx—with the body of a lion and the head of a man, frequently guarding the entrances to tombs and temples. In Greek tradition, however, the Sphinx was portrayed as a female, a gynosphinx, with the body of a lion, the large wings of a bird of prey, a tail ending in a serpent's head or resembling that of a dragon, and the head and breasts of a woman. She was treacherous and merciless.
