The Giants of Patagonia are based on European accounts from the 16th to 18th centuries in which explorers encountered unusually tall Tehuelche individuals and mistook them for supernaturally large people. The reports were reinforced by the fact that the Spaniards themselves were considerably shorter and that the Tehuelche wore layers of fur and large boots that increased their apparent size. Misunderstandings surrounding large megafauna fossils later contributed to the legend of an extinct race of giants. Archaeology, however, shows that no humans in Patagonia taller than approximately two meters have ever been scientifically documented. Nevertheless, the myth lives on, often intertwined with theories about lost civilizations and extraterrestrial influence.
