Andy shares the ideas that have made him such a popular speaker within BNI, including why people should focus on the “afters” they create for others, how to make 60-second presentations easier to refer, why stories create certainty, and how relentless follow-up turns good conversations into real results. Drawing on around 20 years of BNI experience, Andy explains how better communication can help members win more referrals, make more sales and create stronger relationships.

Key Takeaways

Focus on the “afters”, not the service itself.

Andy’s core principle is simple: people care about how they will be better off after working with you. Rather than describing your job title, service or process, explain the outcome you create. A lawyer, for example, is more memorable saying they “keep people out of jail” than simply saying they specialise in a particular area of law.

The best networkers are obsessed with other people.

Andy believes successful referral generators do not just focus on their own goals. In 1-2-1s, they are genuinely curious about the other person, what they want to achieve and how they can help. That mindset shifts networking away from simply looking for business and towards actively creating value for others.

Follow-up is where meetings become results.

Even the best meeting is worthless if nothing happens afterwards. Andy argues that the most successful people are relentless, proactive and prompt in their follow-up. It may not be glamorous, but it is one of the biggest differences between people who have good conversations and people who actually create business from them.

Use the Three Ws in your 60 seconds.

Andy recommends every weekly presentation clearly answers three questions: Who do you want to speak to? Why will that person benefit from speaking to you? And What should the member say to start the conversation? Being specific about the person is only the beginning — members also need to understand the value you bring and have an easy way to introduce you.

Build an “Afters and Stories” bank.

Andy recommends a simple exercise: divide a piece of paper into two columns. On one side, write the outcomes people get from working with you. On the other, write stories that prove you can deliver each outcome. The exercise creates a practical bank of evidence that can then be used in sales conversations, presentations and referral discussions.

Key Moments

“The single biggest thing that the most successful people do is relentlessly, proactively and promptly follow up.”

(On why follow-up is essential to turning meetings into action.)

“They don’t want you to be grateful. They want you to be useful.”

(On approaching customer conversations with confidence and value rather than excessive deference.)

“End every meeting… with two things beginning with D: due and date.”

(On creating clear next steps and making sure meetings actually lead somewhere.)

“It’s like playing football but you don’t try and kick the ball in the goal.”

(On why a meeting without agreed actions and a next date is unlikely to achieve anything.)

About BNI

BNI is the world’s largest referral networking organisation.
