Or are they....

In 1938, Adolf Hitler sent an expedition to Antarctica. They mapped the terrain, claimed a chunk of it for the Reich, and called it Neuschwabenland. Then the war started, and the story gets buried.

Fast forward to 1946. The US Navy launches Operation Highjump - the largest Antarctic expedition in history. Admiral Byrd leads 4,700 men, 13 ships, and 33 aircraft to the most remote continent on Earth. The mission is supposed to last eight months. It's abandoned in eight weeks. Byrd never fully explains why.

Rumour has it that Hitler fled to Antarctica, is that what Byrd and his men were looking for?

Then there's the ice itself. Beneath Antarctica's surface sit gravitational anomalies so massive and so strange that scientists still can't agree on what's causing them. Some say it's geology. Some say it's something buried. And some people - a lot of people - think the two stories are connected.

In this episode, Richard Baker and Dr. Nick Coatsworth head to the bottom of the world and ask the questions the official record doesn't answer.

The 1938 Nazi expedition to Antarctica - what they were looking for, what they found, and why it mattered enough to send a fleet

Base 211 - the alleged secret Nazi base built beneath the ice, and the post-war disappearances that keep the theory alive

Operation Highjump - why the world's most powerful navy turned around and went home, and what Admiral Byrd said in the press afterwards

The Antarctic Treaty of 1959 - who signed it, what it restricts, and why so many nations agreed so quickly to keep the continent off-limits

The gravity anomalies - what's actually sitting under the ice sheet, and why the explanations don't quite add up

Some of this is on the record. Some of it isn't. None of it has ever been fully explained. Join Rich and Nick as they try to figure out what - or who - the world's governments don't want you to find at the bottom of the Earth.

Conspiracy Cabal is proudly supported by WholeLife.
