Five lessons all runners can learn from the sub two hour marathon.

a. High Carb Fuelling is really important. Solid breakfast (toast, honey, tea, 80G carb drink and a gel before the start) plus 230 grams of carbs during the race. Typical energy gel has 20-30 grams.

b. Consistent training matters. Sawe uses a 10 day training block (not the typical 7 days). He does run 125 to 150 miles in a peak week. One long run, One interval, hills and easy runs).

c. Pace to Race success. Plan to run your first half at a slightly slower pace than your race goal with the intention of negative splitting. Make sure you hydrate and fuel to support your ability to negative split.

d. Racing helped achieve faster times. Run with people even in training to achieve success. Use that to motivate you.

e. Believe in yourself, but use evidence from training. Just because you want to run a sub 3 marathon you need your training to support that goal.

https://therunningchannel.com/lessons-two-hour-marathon/

4. It took 18 days, 13 hours and 11 minutes.

d. This is 3 on the list of 1000 mile people. Kouros set the record in 1988 with 1000 miles in 10 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes. In 2024 Brockman completed 1000 miles in 12 days, 13 hours and 16 minutes. So 18 days does not seem quite as impressive now.

https://runningmagazine.ca/the-scene/this-u-s-ultrarunner-just-ran-1000-miles-around-a-track/

5.
